BCCI finally breaks silence on scapegoat Abhishek Nayars sacking as assistant coach

India National Cricket Team assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has been in the news for the last few hours. This is because there have been several media reports that have suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to sack him ahead of the England tour.

The reports claimed that Abhishek Nayar has been removed by the BCCI following India's debacle in Australia, where the Rohit Sharma-led side faced a 3-1 series loss. There has been no clarity as to why the assistant coach has been removed, but the BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, has shared his take on the same.

When asked about why Abhishek Nayar has been removed as an assistant coach of India, he didn't reveal anything and instead mentioned that he will provide details about the same after 1-2 days. Speaking to the Times of India, he said:

"I will give you a clear picture and details in the next 1-2 days."

While Devajit Saikia didn't say anything, a report in PTI has made a shocking revelation. It is learned that Abhishek Nayar has been made a scapegoat in a war between a senior member of the support staff and a senior star player. The source close to the developments said:

Nayar became a scapegoat in the turf war - Source close to BCCI

“While India’s recent Test debacles (against New Zealand and Australia) has led to the churning there is also a feeling in the BCCI that Nayar became a scapegoat in the turf war between an important member of the support staff and a senior star player."

The source close to the developments also said that BCCI conducted a review meeting for the Australia tour in the presence of the top officials. However, on the sidelines of the meeting, a senior member of the coaching staff talked about how Abhishek Nayar's presence is proving to be counter-productive. He added:

“…just after the tour of Australia, there was a review meeting conducted by the BCCI. The top officials of the board, including secretary Devajit Saikia and vice-president Rajeev Shukla, were present along with important members associated with the Indian team, and the national selectors."

It was a way of side-lining Nayar during the Champions Trophy - BCCI source on Sitanshu Kotak's appointment

“On the sidelines of the meeting, a powerful member of the support staff expressed his apprehensions about Nayar’s presence and said how him being in the dressing room is proving to be counter-productive."

The source added that as a result of that, BCCI added Sitanshu Kotak to the team to sideline Abhishek Nayar. He said:

“While the BCCI didn’t act immediately they brought in Kotak, the former Saurashtra run-accumulator. It was a way of side-lining Nayar during the Champions Trophy."

Not only this, it is also reported that when Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the head coach of the team, Abhishek Nayar wasn't the first choice assistant coach. He, along with Ryan Ten Doeschate, was included in the team as a part of the support staff for Gautam Gambhir.
