DENVER (KDVR) — After one of the least snowy Marches in history and record-breaking heat in the mid-80s in April, winter weather is returning to Colorado just in time for Easter.
Denver has had a comfy start to April with highs in the 60s and 70s. On April 12, the city broke a record high for that date when it hit 86 degrees at the Denver International Airport.
While recent conditions have felt like summer, the Pinpoint Weather team is tracking a wintry change that moves in late Thursday and could last through Saturday.
Here is everything you need to know about the mid-April rain and snowstorm.
Timing
Thursday will remain warm in the low 70s, but a change in the air will be felt. Conditions will be windy as more clouds build in throughout the day.
By Thursday evening, rain showers will increase and move over the Front Range after sunset. That rain will then switch to snow overnight into Friday.
Friday is a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day due to soggy and slick conditions. The Pinpoint Weather team said temperatures will drop 30 degrees into the low 40s, with snow showers continuing throughout the day.
Pinpoint Weather Alert Day on April 18This storm is still developing, and the Pinpoint Weather team said the end of the storm is still up in the air. As of Wednesday, the team thinks the storm should clear by Saturday afternoon with slow clearing, however, models are not in agreement on when this system wraps up.
Totals
This storm is still developing, and Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels said totals are dependent on the temperature.
As of Wednesday, the Denver metro could see 2-4 inches of snowfall. However, April snow generally doesn't stick, so Michels believes most will melt on the roads, and grassy surfaces could see light accumulation.
If the temperatures dip into the low 30s or high 20s, then more snow could stick throughout the metro.

Pinpoint Weather: Snow totals through April 19While snow totals are still up in the air, the Pinpoint Weather team is forecasting a good amount of moisture. From late Thursday to Saturday, the metro could get more than half an inch of moisture, which is liquid precipitation like rain and melted snow. This moisture will also help to get rid of some pollen in the air.
Pinpoint Weather: Rain accumulation through April 19Impact
As the mantra goes, "April showers bring May flowers," and Denver will be getting some much-needed moisture. However, the impacts won't be like a normal winter storm.
The Pinpoint Weather team said Thursday through Saturday will be dreary and soggy. Regardless of the total accumulation, this storm will cause some slick and slushy spots due to the consistent melting.
The team is keeping an eye on possible travel impacts over the higher foothills and mountains where the most accumulation is expected from late Friday to early Saturday. So, if you are traveling, be aware of the change in weather.
Again, this storm is still developing, and a shift in temperatures can cause a bigger impact. This story will continuously be updated as the storm approaches.
Pinpoint Weather 7-day forecast for Denver on April 16After the storm ends Saturday, Easter Sunday will have a mix of sun and clouds with seasonal highs in the lower 60s.
