Mike Elko had a fine debut season in College Station, leading Texas A&M to an 8-5 record.
But “fine” isn’t what a passionate fan base is looking for in its head coach, and Elko knows that. After a season-opening loss to Notre Dame, Elko actually had those Aggies fans thinking College Football Playoff during a 7-game winning streak. There was buzz and there was hope that Elko’s first season would turn into something really special.
Then reality hit and the losses started coming, starting with a blowout setback at South Carolina that ended the win streak. Elko’s Aggies lost 3 of 4 to end the regular season, then blew a big lead in a bowl game loss to USC to end the 2024 season with a thud.
Elko is determined to not let that happen again in 2025, and so when speaking on Wednesday about the start of the spring transfer portal window, he wanted to make his approach very clear.
“The biggest thing is adding value,” explained Mike Elko on his portal philosophy. “Adding to add is never a good sign.”
Elko knows that it’s 2025 and believes the current crazy world of college football requires a certain way of thinking for head coaches.
“I don’t think we’ll add to add, but in this day and age you have to constantly be on the (lookout) and on the move for value that can improve your program,” Elko said.
