Costco opens highly anticipated outside section at multiple stores – and shoppers joke ‘Home Depot is sweating’

COSTCO has followed the lead of Home Depot and Lowe’s, opening a highly anticipated outdoor section at a handful of warehouses.

Shoppers noted that the new garden center – filled with gardening supplies and built with all the green thumbs in mind – will give the two home improvement retailers a run for their money.

Costco has built up a loyal fan base of millions of members nationwide, attracting shoppers and their wallets with a variety of tactics.

From its tasty and affordable food court to its samples and wide selection of bulk buys, Costco has serious appeal among consumers.

The warehouse club, however, arguably lacks in one profitable area – gardening and outdoor supplies.

Costco stores typically offer a limited selection of plants, including both garden and indoor plants.

From vegetable plants, shrubs, and trees to houseplants, gardening enthusiasts have raved over the quality and price of Costco’s plants.

Shoppers on Reddit have praised the retailer’s plant section as being “really great value,” noting that they were “far cheaper than nursery prices.”

However, some members have expressed a desire for a wider variety and better selection of plants.

Because the gardening items are limited by space, they are often sold in smaller quantities and sizes.

Costco has stepped up to the plate, opening a new outdoor garden center at a handful of locations offering a bigger and better selection.

One shopper from Coeur d’Alene in northwest Idaho spotted an outside space for plants on their recent trip to Costco, sharing their find in a Reddit post over the weekend.

The customer noted that the outdoor gardening section was new and that it was fully fenced.

“This is the first I’m seeing it,” they wrote. “Normally it’s when you first come in. And down the freezer aisle if there’s a lot of plants.”

Many fellow Costco shoppers were jealous of the larger plant selection, with one saying, “I wish my Costco did this.”

Others joked that the new outdoor garden center would steal business from stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s, both well-known for their expansive selection of plants and garden supplies.

“Home Depot sweating,” commented one Costco fan, while another said, “Lowe’s trembling.”

    BUDGET BLOOMS

Costco’s outdoor section is nothing new, with many warehouses in Canada having a dedicated outdoor garden center.

While the green thumb haven is less common in the US, some locations have had the outdoor section for years.

The section is temporary, popping up seasonally around spring and early summer and lasting for a few months.

Several US Costco locations feature an outdoor garden section, according to shopper reports on Reddit:

Boise, Idaho Sacramento, California Newington, Virginia Colchester, Vermont Manassas, Virginia Rohnert Park, California Springfield, Virginia  DC metro area Beltsville, Maryland Chantilly, Virginia Garner, North Carolina Mount Vernon, Virginia Fairfax, Virginia

While some locations fence off a section of the parking lot and open a side door for access, others have a designated area within or adjacent to the main building.

Selection varies by location, with some members claiming that their outdoor selection was limited to the racks of flowers that Costco normally sells inside the warehouse.

Other locations, however, stock larger plants, trees, shrubs, and bulky garden items such as soil and ceramic pots that would not fit inside.

Beyond the chain’s garden section, shoppers are making other exciting Costco discoveries.

One member revealed a little-known “coupon book” filled with deals – but you’ll have to be quick to get the sales.

Plus, Costco fans are raving over an $11.49 dessert kit that is “next level” – it’s perfect for summer and has shoppers “drooling.”
