Cleveland Browns in $60 million Deshaun Watson boost as little-known contract clause activates after QB’s injury

THE Cleveland Browns are set to recover almost $60 million thanks to a little-known clause in Deshaun Watson’s contract.

The quarterback has been plagued by injury problems ever since he arrived in Cleveland in March 2022.

Watson was traded by the Houston Texans on a fully guaranteed $230 million contract.

He has yet to play a full season for the Browns and had surgery in January which could keep him out of 2025.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam described the move to trade Watson as “a big swing and miss.”

But the franchise has a chance to recoup a large chunk of money thanks to a clause in the quarterback’s contract.

Cleveland purchased insurance amid Watson’s injury problems, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported.

The contract covers Cleveland for $58.176 million between the 2024 and 2025 season.

Watson tore his Achilles in Week 7 of the 2024 campaign.

He underwent surgery but suffered a re-rupture which required another operation in January.

Florio also detailed the breakdown of the $58 million figure.

$12.691 million was for 2024 signing bonus as well as $1.21 million in base salary for that season.

And $44.274 million of his $46 million base salary for 2025 was also included.

The Browns were 1-6 and last in the NFL with Watson at quarterback in 2024.

Haslem recently admitted, “We took a big swing and miss with Deshaun.

“We thought we had the quarterback.

“We didn’t and we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him.

‘So we’ve got to dig ourselves out of that hole.

“The trade was an entire organization decision and it ends with Dee (wife and co-owner) and I, so hold us accountable.”

Last year they finished 3-14 and hold the No. 2 overall pick in this month’s NFL Draft.

Cleveland’s last playoff win came in 2020 in the wild card round against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

They made the playoffs in 2023, led by Joe Flacco’s charge at quarterback.
