Phoenix — The Arizona Diamondbacks are not yet playing their best baseball, but they are getting closer.
That was the sentiment from manager Torey Lovullo after a 5-2 victory over the Brewers on Sunday, capping a 4-2 homestand with series wins over Milwaukee and Baltimore.
The D-backs lost both series openers against 2024 playoff teams. They faced a daunting 4-0 deficit on Saturday night before storming back to stun Milwaukee on a walk-off Lourdes Gurriel Jr. sacrifice fly.

How the Diamondbacks turned their offense around in epic rally to beat Brewers
Arizona improved to 9-7 with some gritty wins, while there is another level the club would like to reach.
“There’s so much to unpack here,” Lovullo said. “At the end of the day, we won a big series against a very good baseball team on two occasions. We lost the first game to the Orioles and the first game to Milwaukee and came back to win the series. This team is very determined and we’re moving in the right direction.”
To break down a six-game stretch that has put the Diamondbacks on a better path, let’s review some of the standouts from this homestand.
The 5: Diamondbacks who balled out during homestand
Corbin Carroll
Homestand: 10-for-24 (.417), three doubles, two home runs, four RBIs, two walks, one steal
Carroll continues to contribute to every game the Diamondbacks play, extending his on-base streak to 16 games to start the season. That’s the longest such streak for a Diamondbacks player since 2018 (David Peralta with 16). The club record is 35 games from Luis Gonzalez in 2001, per Stathead.
Carroll has gotten on base in 22 straight games, dating back to last September.
He also recorded an extra-base hit in five of the six games at Chase Field, homering twice against Baltimore and delivering a clutch two-run double in the ninth inning against Milwaukee on Saturday.

After Saturday’s win, Carroll’s 1.4 fWAR led all of baseball, and he followed that up with a two-hit performance on Sunday. Plus, he finally stole a base on his first attempt of the year.
He is on the opposite end of the spectrum opposed to his slow start in 2024.
The Diamondbacks miss Ketel Marte’s production from the top of the order, as he continues to work back from a hamstring strain. The offense ran very hot and frigid over the last four games especially, with a 17-inning scoreless stretch.
Carroll has consistently created scoring opportunities for the offense to stay afloat.
Geraldo Perdomo
Homestand: 6-for-16 (.375), 10 walks, four runs
Perdomo also worked his way aboard in all six games, drawing a whopping 10 walks. The last Diamondbacks player to walk 10 times in five games was Paul Goldschmidt in 2016, per the team.
The switch-hitter drew a key walk during the five-run ninth inning and scored the game-winning run. He reached base four times on Saturday and then three times on Sunday.
Perdomo also has not struck out in his last 43 plate appearances, dating back to April 3. That’s the longest active streak by plate appearances in MLB.
Brandon Pfaadt
Homestand: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 Ks
Pfaadt has thrown six innings in all three of his starts this season, but his latest was his most effective. Pfaadt blanked the Orioles on Wednesday in a blowout 9-0 victory. The D-backs did not run away with the game until a five-run fifth inning, as Pfaadt worked efficiently to keep them ahead until the offense heated up.
Pfaadt missed barrels all day, using his entire five-pitch mix prominently. Through three turns in the rotation, the Diamondbacks’ most consistent starter has been Pfaadt so far (3.50 ERA, 0.5 bWAR).

The Diamondbacks’ starting rotation as a whole had a much better stretch with five straight quality starts.
Zac Gallen bounced back from a tough five-run outing on Monday with six innings and two earned runs to keep the Diamondbacks in Sunday’s game before a late surge.
Corbin Burnes delivered his best showing with the club thus far on Saturday, while Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez were both solid.
In the last five games, Arizona’s starting pitcher ERA is 2.43, a significant improvement from the first 11 games (6.27).
“We definitely hold ourselves to a high standard, so I think we’ve been pretty frustrated as a whole of our performance,” Gallen said on Sunday.
“A big part of us having success is doing our job … I think we’re heading on the right track.”
Josh Naylor
Homestand: 9-for-23 (.391), double, home run, six RBIs, two walks
Naylor recorded a hit in five of the six games, four of which went for extra-bases. He blasted his first Diamondbacks home run in Wednesday’s win over Baltimore and delivered the go-ahead knock in the seventh inning on Sunday.
The left-handed bat is tied for fourth in MLB with six doubles this season. He’s tied with Carroll and Pavin Smith, who also deserves a mention for going 6-for-16 during the six games.

Naylor stole another base on Sunday, upping his total to four. He stole six all of last year, but he said during spring training he would break his career high of 10 this season.
Bullpen as a whole
The bullpen success thus far into the season has been a group effort, and this homestand was no different.
Over the past two games, Diamondbacks relievers accounted for six innings and one earned run, as Ryne Nelson threw three innings to give the club a puncher’s chance at a comeback on Saturday. Jalen Beeks, Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk each delivered a scoreless inning to lock down Sunday’s game.
“The thing I like most about it is their flexibility and understanding some of the challenges that we have right now,” Lovullo said. “Without having a closer, they’ve accepted that the roles are very dynamic and moving. … Anytime you have a fluid part that’s moving and it’s working, you know they’re engaged.
“It’s been the most stable part of the ballclub when you’re breaking it down.”
Nelson is counted on to cover ground as a starter pitching in a bullpen role, and he delivered six innings with one run during this stretch at Chase Field.
Beeks and Ryan Thompson have combined for 5.2 scoreless innings, while co-closers Martinez and Puk provided two shutout frames each.
Diamondbacks relievers worked a 2.37 ERA in 19 innings over this homestand, even with four earned runs in 1.1 innings from Joe Mantiply on Friday.
What’s next for the Diamondbacks?
The Diamondbacks hit the road for six games, starting on Tuesday. They will visit the Miami Marlins from Tuesday to Thursday and then head to Wrigley Field to face the Chicago Cubs over the weekend.
Arizona split a four-game series with the Cubs to begin the season at Chase Field.
The Diamondbacks will roll out Kelly, Pfaadt and Rodriguez against the 8-7 Marlins.
Miami’s probables are right-handers Connor Gillispie, Max Meyer and Edward Cabrera. The Diamondbacks will miss Miami ace Sandy Alcantara.
