Coachella 2025: Charli XCX brings Brat energy and club culture

By the time Charli XCX stormed the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival main stage on Saturday evening at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, the sea of neon green and black outfits in the crowd had already said enough: this was Bratchella.

Opening with the hard-hitting “365 (Party Girl Remix)” and flowing seamlessly into “360,” Charli arrived in her signature all-black party ensemble, red solo cup in hand, with the word PARTY flashing behind her in stark black and white visuals. It was the beginning of an intentionally unhinged set that celebrated the gritty, sweaty chaos of club culture — not in a sanitized, polished way, but in the way that evokes memories of late-night 3 a.m. warehouse raves.

Charli’s performance felt like a love letter to her roots in the club underground, her longtime identity as a pop outsider, and a well-earned victory lap after taking home three trophies at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards this year.

This night, it was all about Brat, with most of the setlist drawn from her fifth and arguably most defining studio album. The era has not only earned her critical acclaim and introduced her to a new wave of fans, but also sparked a cultural movement — one that feels both nostalgic and future-facing, like a rave you’ve been to before and never want to leave.

Midway through, she surprised the crowd with a parade of A-list collaborators. Troye Sivan joined her on stage to perform the remix of “Talk Talk,” donning a Protect the Dolls shirt in solidarity with trans and drag communities. Later, Lorde made an entrance for their “Girl, So Confusing” duet, a moment Charli prefaced by dedicating the song to girlhood and its beautiful messiness: “If you’re a girl here, yell if you know what I mean!” she shouted into the crowd. The biggest scream of the night, though, came when Billie Eilish surprisingly appeared on stage to perform their remix of “Guess,” sending fans into a frenzy.

Though Charli wasn’t billed as a headliner, taking the stage just after 7:15 p.m. during the golden-hour glow, the crowd painted a different picture. From the sea of neon green to the sheer volume of voices screaming every lyric, it was obvious she had one of the most passionate and loyal fanbases of the entire day.

And even till the end, the set never lost its momentum or sense of play, turning the Coachella grounds into a full-on dancefloor and party. During “Apple,” Charli gleefully asked, “Who wants to be an apple, Coachella?” while strutting down the catwalk, solo cup still in hand. Behind her, well-known models and influencers Alex Consani, Gabbriette and Quen Blackwell — part of her “360” music video internet It-girl crew — did the viral TikTok dance, cementing Charli’s tight grip on both club kids and meme culture.

What made the performance hit harder than any surprise guest or remix, though, was the energy. Charli didn’t just bring the rave to Coachella, she was the rave. Every beat drop, every strut across the stage, every chaotic transition felt like it came from someone who has lived those nights. This wasn’t pop for the radio. It was pop for the sweaty, glittered-up dancers in the back of the club.

And yet, she brought that rawness to one of the biggest stages in the world.

The set closed with her iconic feature on Iggy Pop’s “I Love It,” the song that first broke her into the mainstream more than a decade ago.

As the screens flashed old clips of Charli through the years, a green flag marked Brat appeared, waved, then burned. “PLEASE DON’T LET IT BE OVER,” the message read. For the fans screaming in the crowd, it was less of a plea and more of a promise: The era of Charli XCX is far from done, and it’s only getting started.
