The One Foundation Mistake Creasing Your Skin, Says Celebrity Makeup Artist

Any expert will tell you that foundation is the base of a great makeup routine. Most commonly found in liquid form, the cosmetic product is applied all over the face to even out skin tone and cover imperfections. The last thing you want from your foundation, then, is to crease, settling into fine lines or wrinkles, and creating an uneven, cakey look.

In a video posted to her TikTok, celebrity makeup artist Melissa Murdick (@itsmakeupbymelissam) shared that creasing is usually caused by applying too much product. Luckily, she also provided the solution—once you apply your foundation, take a (clean!) small, fluffy brush and swipe anywhere you have those lines.

According to Murdick, the clean brush will pick up any excess foundation that would otherwise gather around and settle into those lines.

The cause of creasing, she shares, can also be attributed to a build-up of foundation around areas that naturally move throughout the day as we talk, eat, laugh, smile, etc. By removing extra product from those areas, there is less there to crease, so you decrease the issue (see what we did there?). In her video, Murdock used a small concealer brush for the technique, but any other small and fluffy brush would work, like an eyeshadow blending brush or precision powder brush. Just make sure the brush has no product on it.

Since too much foundation can be a cause of creasing, using product sparingly will also help the problem. This can be said about cosmetics other than foundation, too. Concealer, blush, bronzer and powder all pile up on top of each other, and too much of any or all will exacerbate creasing.Another important tip is finding the right foundation for your skin. If you choose a product that doesn’t provide as much coverage as you’d like, you might end up applying multiple layers, which will inevitably crease. Or, if you choose one that’s too heavy for your skin, the same thing will happen. Experimenting with different foundation formulas (liquid, cream or powder) as well as coverage levels will help you decide which you feel best in.Another tip is to prep your skin correctly. Make sure you’re using a hydrating moisturizer before applying your foundation. Dry and rough skin can make your foundation appear cracked and creased. Regular exfoliation can help remove dry, dead skin, too. You can do this by applying an exfoliating toner after cleansing your face or gently rubbing a wet microfiber cloth over your face before cleansing a few times per week. Proper hydration is key.

Creasing can happen no matter your age; most of us have natural smile lines around our eyes and mouths. While she shares tips and tricks to help with this common issue, Murdick also reminds viewers that “makeup creasing isn't always 100% preventable.” We’re all human and have real skin with differing textures, and she urges us to embrace it and use makeup as a tool to enhance your confidence and natural beauty rather than simply covering flaws.
