PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks had nothing going offensively on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers, as a quiet and frustrated group in the dugout stared at eight zeroes on the scoreboard.
The D-backs were at risk of being shut out for a second straight game with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and a 4-0 deficit. The bottom third of the order was up.
Eight batters later, Diamondbacks players were jumping on outfielders Jake McCarthy and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for delivering the game-tying and walk-off RBIs. The D-backs won 5-4, as if the previous two hours controlled by Milwaukee didn’t even happen.

“Really fun, it was a frustrating couple innings of baseball there for this game and the last game on the offensive side,” Corbin Carroll said. “And to be able to do it when it really mattered, have a bunch of quality at-bats in a row, it was awesome to see.”
The Diamondbacks (8-7) are not new to suddenly becoming uncontainable on offense, they scored eight runs in the eighth inning of a comeback win a couple weeks ago.
But where does it start and how does it heat up so quickly?
“It would be easy for this team to shut down, but they don’t,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “You just don’t know where the rally’s gonna start, how it’s gonna start, who’s gonna start it and then who’s gonna be in position to do something special like McCarthy and Gurriel. We started to have some really stubborn at-bats. We started to get really specific as to what we were looking for, and a lot of really good things showed up.”
“ I feel like it’s a team effort,” Geraldo Perdomo said. “You gotta get on base for the guy behind you. I think that’s the mentality we have.”
Getting the building going
The order of operations went walk, hit, walk, hit, walk, hit and sacrifice fly to stun the Brewers (8-7), who even added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning.
Gabriel Moreno started the sequence with what seemed to be a pretty trivial five-pitch walk against Joel Payamps. Moreno who had a miserable game at the plate (0-for-3 with a double play), took on a couple close pitches off the edge to bring up Alek Thomas.
Thomas watched the first pitch for a ball. Payamps had to get one over the plate and Thomas knew it. He pounded a fastball 419 feet to the deepest part of Chase Field. According to Statcast, the ball would have left 25 of 30 ballparks, but Thomas zipped around the bases for a triple.
The Chase Field crowd — nearly 35,000 strong in attendance to watch Corbin Burnes’ first home start and collect an Eugenio Suarez bobblehead — finally had a chance to erupt.
The Brewers pivoted to closer Trevor Megill, who promptly walked nine-hole hitter Garrett Hampson on four pitches closer to Hampson’s head than the strike zone. The table was set.
Carroll and Perdomo come through
Carroll represented the tying run. One of the hottest hitters in baseball, Carroll crushed a fastball 417 feet, which would have been a home run in 24 ballparks. Not Chase Field, however, but both runs scored on a double that put the tying run 180 feet away.

Perdomo, who had reached base three times already, was next and made Megill work. Perdomo jumped ahead 3-0, took a strike and fouled off three pitches before watching a ball in the dirt.
He flipped his bat to the ground and clapped his hands toward the Diamondbacks’ dugout. The winning run was on and all the momentum on their side.
“I just try to be calm and getting good approach because I know I have really good hitters behind me,” Perdomo said. “Especially in that situation, I just tried to get something close or close to my hot zone. Unfortunately I didn’t get it, I mean, I missed a couple pitches, but in a situation like that, just try to do my best and get more as many pitches as I can and give it to the next guy.”
Jake McCarthy’s redemption arc
It was now up to McCarthy.
McCarthy started the year 0-for-24, a real war of attrition mentally to trust the process while avoiding freaking out over results. It wasn’t always easy, but McCarthy had started to climb out on the other side.
This was a big opportunity to build some confidence, and he did not waste any time. Megill challenged him with a fastball, McCarthy saw it coming and lined it to right field. It dropped for a hit, the game-tying knock to score Carroll.
“It feels good when you can impact the outcome of the game,” McCarthy said. “I just think that’s where you want to be, a situation like that. My teammates did a great job of getting me up there. I think there were like four or five incredible at-bats beforehand, and I’m glad they passed the baton to me and I’m glad I could pass it to (Gurriel).”

“ Jake stood out to me,” Carroll said. “I feel like anytime it’s a situation like that where confidence isn’t maybe the highest, to be able to get the job done, I think that can be big moving forward.”
Perdomo reached third base with less than two outs, so Gurriel just had to get the ball in the air. And he did, the first walk-off win of Arizona’s season and sixth comeback win.
According to Statcast, the Brewers had a 99% chance to close the game out before Moreno walked. They still had a 90% chance when Hampson walked.
This season in many respects has not started ideally, and there has been some frustration and anxiety over that. But a game “ain’t over ’til it’s over,” and this team continues to prove its grit by reiterating Yogi Berra’s message.
“We get frustrated sometimes,” Perdomo said. “But we’re still early and we’re coming.”
