High school sports weekly wrap-up: Local baseball, soccer players among state’s leaders; Greeley West to honor state champion

A recently as it may have started, the high school sports spring season is at about the midway point for most local teams.

A month’s worth of action has certainly provided enough sample size to start distinguishing the top performers in various spring sports like baseball and girls soccer.

    According to statistics entered into the national website MaxPreps, many local standouts are among the state’s leaders in various statistical categories within their sport and their classification.

    Among them, Severance’s Dom Rice, Highland’s Stetson Hendren and Dayspring Christian’s Logan Vaniddekinge are tied with numerous other baseball sluggers for 12th-most home runs in the state with three homers apiece. The Classical Academy’s Zack Hale has the most home runs in the state with nine.

    Hendren is also tied for eighth in the state in RBI, first in 2A, with 21. Severance’s Domanick Estrella-Torres is tied for 15th in RBI with 19. He’s fifth in 4A. Hale also leads the state in RBI with 27.

    Defensively, Weld Central’s Luke Witzel and Eaton’s Gunnar Garrison have been two of the state’s more formidable pitchers, tying for 11th in the state in strikeouts. Each of them has fanned 47 batters. They are third and fourth, respectively, in 3A.

    Platte Valley’s Hazen Weber and Roosevelt’s Brady Mylander are tied for 17th in strikeouts with 44. Weber is fourth in 2A, while Mylander is tied for sixth in 4A.

    Front Range Christian’s Haedan Morton leads the state in strikeouts with 66 in 34 1/3 innings.

    Prominence on the pitch

    Local athletes are also among the state’s leaders on the girls soccer pitch.

    Frontier Academy standout Emily Gesick is tied for 16th in 2A in total goals with nine. Windsor Charter’s Dillan Brown is tied for 20th in 2A in goals with eight. Bishop Machebeuf’s Josephine Sri is the classification’s leader in goals with 22.

    Brown is also tied for 11th in 2A in assists with five. James Irwin’s Baili McKim is first in 2A in assists with 14.

    Union Colony goalkeeper Nadene Chacon has proven her value in goal this season. She’s second in the state, among all classifications — first in 2A — in saves with 134. Brighton’s Kene Keyes leads the state in saves with 163. Weld Central’s Abigail Hamblin is tied for 18th in the state, fourth in 3A, in saves with 81.

    Greeley Central’s Esmeralda Corral is fourth in 4A in saves with 78. Windsor’s Leah Bacon is tied for 16th in the classification in saves with 40.

    Roosevelt’s Taya Armstrong is 10th in 3A in saves with 62. Valley’s Mackenzie Rodriguez is 16th in saves in 3A with 48.

    Honoring the past

    Rivalry matchups with Greeley West and Greeley Central rarely lack intrigue and anticipation.

    But next month, the Spartans’ season-finale against Greeley Central will draw even more interest than usual.

    Before first pitch is thrown at 7 p.m. May 8 at Butch Butler Field, West will honor its 1975 AAA state championship team. That team defeated Grand Junction 15-3 in the title game.

    The ceremony is slated to take place around 6:45 p.m.

    The Spartans are hoping players, managers and coaches from that team take part in the festivities. The day before the game, coach Jim Jorgensen and co., will take the alum on a tour through Greeley West’s new building before welcoming the alum to the team’s final practice of the season.

    That night, the Spartans will host an informal dinner for the alum.
