Duda Farm Fresh Foods has voluntarily recalled its Marketside celery sticks in 29 states due to potential contamination concerns.

On April 10, the company pulled 1,587 cases of the pre-washed, ready-to-eat four-packs from store shelves after it was found that they may be contaminated.

The potential contaminant was given as Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause a serious infection called listeriosis.

It is one of the most common causes for food recalls.

The bacteria is typically found in contaminated food.

Food items most commonly affected by it are unpasteurized dairy products, raw meats, and ready-to-eat foods like deli meats.

Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues.

It can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

It can even be transmitted by a pregnant mother to her unborn child.

Approximately 1,600 people contract Listeriosis each year.

Listeria can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, sepsis, urinary tract infections, and even death, depending on the severity of the infection.

The contamination was discovered during a random inspection by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

So far, there have been zero reported deaths or illnesses due to the celery.

However, the FDA is encouraging those who may have already purchased bags from the potentially contaminated batches to sell or return them.

The recall is for celery sticks sold at Walmart with a 03/23/2025 expiration date.

The UPC number for the potentially hazardous product is 6 81131 16151 0 and the lot code number is P047650.

The product recall is already one of several affecting Walmart this year.

More than 1,700 pounds of butter sold at stores including Walmart were recalled across seven states.

Another popular food item was also recalled from Walmart stores after a production error caused products to end up with the wrong packaging and labels.
