Colin Farrell is mourning the loss of a beloved family member.
The actor's father, Eamon Farrell, died on Wednesday, April 9 after battling a "long illness," according to a death notice issued this week. He was 83.

According to the notice, Eamon, a former professional soccer player, died "peacefully" on Wednesday "after a long illness bravely borne, in the loving care of his family and the excellent staff of the Whitworth Ward, Beaumont Hospital."
The Shamrock Rovers Football Club, for which Eamon previously played, shared a tribute to the late athlete via Instagram this week, sharing an old black-and-white photo from Eamon's younger years.

"Eamon joined Rovers in 1960 at 18 years of age from the famous schoolboy nursery club Home Farm," the soccer organization wrote in the caption.
The tribute continued by describing Eamon as "A half back who was a minor and schoolboy Ireland international, Eamonn played alongside his older brother Tommy during his time at Milltown. Both were on the team that beat Shelbourne in the FAI Cup final in 1962 played in front of an attendance of 32,000."
concluded with the Irish phrase, "Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam," which translates to "May his soul rest at the right hand of God."
In addition to the Oscar-nominated actor, Eamon is survived by his wife Eileen and three other adult children: Eamon, Catherine, Claudine.
