Denny Hamlin teases Nascar retirement with ‘plans’ in place after 44-year-old legend wins back-to-back races

DENNY Hamlin is coming off back-to-back race wins at 44 years old and doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon.

The Nascar legend appears to be extending the prime of his career even as he continues to age.

Racing has always been a sport that athletes have been able to compete in further than traditional sports like baseball and football.

While Hamlin has successfully extended his career into his 40s, he is still looking ahead to what his plans could be in the future.

He isn’t thinking of retirement yet, but Hamlin has an idea of how he wants to wind down his career.

“Not right now. I mean, you always have to plan for it, and you want to give the team proper time to come up with their next plan as well,” Hamlin told Dale Earnhardt Jr.

“I think that running some at 23XI is something that I’d like to do.

“You know, Joe Gibbs Racing’s been amazing to me over the 20 years that I’ve been with them.

“Just fantastic, couldn’t be any better. Joe and that whole group has just been amazing.”

Hamlin co-owns the 23XI race team with Michael Jordan, a team that has found success in its short tenure in Nascar so far.

He said that owning the team could sway some of his future decisions.

“But you know, there’s certain things that are different. I do have a race team. You know, I really would like – even if I phased out and ran some there, that would be a cool goal of mine. Just whatever it is,” Hamlin said.

“Five races, 25, whatever it might be. It’d be a cool way to phase out instead of just stopping. I think I’d have a tough time just stopping.

“But I want to be competitive when I do it. I don’t want to do it when I’m passed my prime of winning.

“However that timing works, that’s how I would like for it to work, but you don’t always get to decide.

“That’s the thing is sometimes, the people that employ you, they’ve got a business to run and sometimes it just doesn’t make sense for them anymore.

“They bank on your decline, not necessarily what you’re doing. So, it, you know, we never know how this thing’s going to end up.

“Certainly, you always have to look towards the end and how you want it to go.”

Hamlin will be one of the greatest Nascar drivers of all time when he does retire, even if he doesn’t win a championship by then.

His 56 wins are approaching the top 10 of all time, and he will certainly have more than that once he retires.

Hamlin is also teaming up with Jordan to fight back against Nascar’s charter system, potentially opening up a way for teams to earn a bigger share of the sport’s revenue.

By the time he hangs up his helmet, Hamlin’s impact on the racing series could be massive.
