The Town and Country Resort in Mission Valley is a destination for conferences from all over the world.
From April 11-13 the resort will be the site of a controversial gathering: an anti-vaccine rally billing itself as an autism health conference.
“Your journey to wellness starts here!” says an ad for the Autism Health Summit, which boasts a litany of well-known anti-vaccine activists, many of whom are known for falsely linking autism to widely used vaccines.
One such speaker, Peter McCullough, is a cardiologist who has spent years making multiple false claims — including in now-retracted papers — about COVID-19 vaccines.
Another listed speaker, Phillip Yoo, has an Instagram account that appears to be devoted to discussing nonexistent “vaccine injuries” and promoting the film “Died Suddenly,” an anti-vaccine propaganda film that has been widely debunked and derided by health experts.
The keynote speaker listed on the site, Del Bigtree, is a prominent anti-vaccine activist and CEO of the antivaxxer “Consent Action Network.” He was previously banned from Facebook for spreading disinformation.
Bigtree also worked on Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s presidential campaign in 2024, which was rife with disinformation and directly connected to various conspiracists.
Anti-vaccine activists are well known for disguising their motives with “concerns” or “advocacy” for people with autism, due to a widely discredited academic paper — long since retracted — that connected vaccination with the condition, as well as a host of other symptoms that goes under the vague and misleading umbrella term of “vaccine injury.”
Despite the fact that the information they present is flawed, the antivaxxer industry remains lucrative as Americans search for answers to physical and mental issues within a patchwork health-care industry and rising costs of living — spreading potentially deadly ideology along the way.
Times of San Diego has reached out to Town and Country Resort for comment about the upcoming conference.
