A NEW York Islanders minor league player has received a 10-game suspension for a brutal hit on an official.
The hockey incident occurred during an April 5 game.
AHL player Adam Beckman, a winger for the Bridgeport Islanders, skated into a referee during a game against the Charlotte Checkers.
Beckmam pushed the official who was sent into the boards before falling on the ice in pain.
Luckily, the ref didn’t sustain any injuries and was able to get back on his feet and continue the rest of the contest.
But Beckman has been suspended for 10 games due to “physical abuse of an official.”
So, he will miss the final five games of the current AHL season and the first five games of next season with whichever team he’s on.
Beckman is set to be a free agent after the hockey season ends.
The 23-year-old did seem distracted before his collision with the official.
And Beckman appeared to be apologetic after noticing the ref’s pain after the shove.
Nonetheless, he will be sidelined for the foreseeable future.
Fans shared their opinions of the punishment, as some believed Beckman’s suspension was warranted.
“I’m surprised it was only 10 games. Good punishment though,” one wrote.
“Deserved punishment,” another stated.
Others believed the punishment was excessive as they believed that Beckman’s actions after the push caused them to believe it was simply an accident.
“10 games is a tough pill to swallow when you can clearly, CLEARLY tell how accidental this is. Actions have consequences but this should’ve been 5 games,” one wrote.
“Definitely wanted to move him and then the guy fell like a toddler. 10 games way too much,” another said.
The official was sent to the boards before landing on the ice in painAHLTVBeckman has been in the Islanders organization since he was traded from the New Jersey Devils earlier this year.
During his 12 games with Bridgeport, he has four goals and seven points.
Beckman entered the NHL in 2019 as a third-round pick by the Minnesota Wild.
He’s made 23 appearances in the NHL, and all came with the Wild.
Beckman’s hit of the referee wasn’t the only brutal treatment of an official in the hockey world recently.
Earlier this week, former NHL forward Brendan Lemieux was suspended for punching a referee during a brawl with an opponent during a game overseas in Switzerland.
