San Jose Sharks lose another defenseman to season-ending injury

SAN JOSE — San Jose Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro will have to miss the season’s final week after he was injured in the second period of Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Wild.

With the Sharks on the penalty kill, Ferraro, standing in front of the Sharks’ net, crumpled to the ice after a hard shot by Matt Boldy hit his ankle just before Joel Eriksson Ek’s scored his second goal of the game.

Ferraro left the game with a lower-body injury and did not return, as the Sharks lost 8-7 in overtime. The Sharks have four games left, starting with Friday’s game in Edmonton against the Oilers.

Ferraro’s injury comes just over a week after Shakir Mukhamadullin also sustained a season-ending upper-body injury in a April 1 game against the Anaheim Ducks. After the March 7 trade deadline, which saw the Sharks send Jake Walman to the Oilers among several other moves, Ferraro and Mukhamadullin had comprised the Sharks’ top defense pair.

Ferraro, an alternate captain, led the current Sharks roster in average time on ice (21:24), and shorthanded time on ice per game (2:41). He also led the Sharks in blocked shots this year with 125.
