CFB insider reveals details of shoulder injury to DJ Lagway

Florida is set to hold its Orange and Blue spring game on Saturday. This year’s game will have a different feel, with star quarterback DJ Lagway dealing with two injuries.

As Florida began spring practice back in early March, head coach Billy Napier revealed Lagway would be limited as a thrower due to a shoulder injury and lower body injury. A new report offers details on Lagway’s injury situation.

Matt Hayes of USA TODAY reports, per sources, that Lagway’s shoulder injury could eventually require surgery. The injury goes back to Lagway’s high school days, Hayes notes, and extended rest and rehabilitation was the course of action then.

Per Hayes, Lagway and his family opted for rest and rehab again this offseason in hopes that it would allow him to play the 2025 season. At this point, surgery would sideline him for the 2025 campaign. It’s possible that Lagway could have surgery after the 2025 season and be ready in time for 2026. The lower body injury is described as a “core injury” by Hayes.

A 5-star recruit in the Class of 2024, Lagway received snaps beginning in Week 1 of his freshman season. The Gators were 3-3 when starting quarterback Graham Mertz was lost for the year due to injury. Florida finished 8-5, with the only losses coming when Lagway did not finish (Georgia) and did not play at all (Texas) due to a hamstring injury.

Lagway finished his true freshman season completing 115-of-192 passes (59.9%) for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He was recognized as a Freshman All-American by the FWAA and ESPN.

Ahead of spring, Florida added 2 scholarship quarterbacks to the 2025 roster. The Gators also return preferred walk-on Aidan Warner, who filled in for Lagway against Georgia and Texas.

UF signed Tramell Jones Jr., a 4-star QB prospect on the 247Sports Composite, as part of its 2025 recruiting class. In January, the Gators added Harrison Bailey, a 6th-year senior who began his career at Tennessee, via the transfer portal.
