Matlock Boss Shares When and How Mattys Real Identity Was Revealed (Exclusive)

When Matlock ended last week, it was with the shocking revelation to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) that Matty Matlock (Kathy Bates) was not who she said she was and we watched as Olympia accosted her associate in a way she couldn't deny.

As Matty headed home to figure out her next move in the search for the missing Wellbrexa document, she got off the bus and prepared to head around the corner to get into her limo for her trip to Connecticut when she was suddenly confronted by Olympia. Matty tried to play it off, saying, “You almost gave this old lady a heart attack. Do you need me to go back to the office? Is it the Johnson case?”

That’s when Olympia told her, “You are the Johnson case.” And Matty realized her deception had been revealed. Olympia knew she not only wasn’t who she said she was, but that she had been lying to her, despite pretending to be her friend.

So, this week’s “I Was That, Too” episode will pick up right there. We will find out if Olympia is going to be Matty’s judge and jury or if she’s going to call the cops and have her arrested for fraud.

In flashbacks, we find out that Olympia got suspicious when she and Julian were jailed together for contempt, and she confronted him about the recording pen. He denied knowing anything about it, so that put Olympia on alert. Then she found Alfie’s (Aaron Harris) wallet when he dropped it in her office. Olympia looked inside and saw that his ID was from Connecticut, not Queens, where she believed he and Matty lived.

The last straw was when Matty’s sister Bitsy (Julie Hagerty) brought papers to court that Matty had left at home. Olympia didn’t know who the woman was and asked one of the marshals if she could look at the CCTV footage from outside the building. There, she saw Matty’s sister get into a car. She wrote down the plate and she asked a favor of Amina (Azie Tesfai), her friend in the District Attorney’s office, to find the owner.

Matlock showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman confirmed to Parade that Olympia’s suspicions started when she confronted Julian when they were in jail.

“It started with the pen and the recording device, which just left a sneaking, a bad taste in her mouth. Like, 'Would Julian actually do that?'” Urman told Parade. “Would he do that to get a leg up on the divorce? And when he said in jail that he wouldn’t, and he swears, she was like, ‘Huh.’  And then the next clue was the ice cream store. And that was another 'huh.' And now she’s starting to get suspicious. But it really wasn’t activated until about Episode 9.”

Episode 9 was the “Friends” episode in which Matty helped Olympia take on Elijah’s cousin’s wrongful termination case. It was also when Matty's husband Edwin (Sam Anderson) worried that the longer Matty remained at Jacobson Moore, the more she put herself in danger of being caught.

As for the consequences of getting caught, I’ve never been sure of why she would go to jail, so I asked Urman what law is she breaking.

“She’s definitely done some shady things in the law firm,” she replied. “And she’s definitely done things under false pretenses and maybe a little bit of trespassing, or the listening device that’s certainly jail worthy, putting that in someone’s office, but she doesn’t have a lot of fingerprints.”

As for tonight’s episode, Olympia takes on the case of a pregnant woman who asks for her help obtaining a divorce from her husband, whose family is a client of the firm, and it parallels what is going on with Matty because there’s fraud involved and Olympia is on the war path when it comes to Matty's having lied to her for so long and about so many important things.

Matlock airs Thursday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Streams next day on Paramount+.
