SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- "R-Evolution," a 45-foot-tall sculpture of a naked woman that was originally slated to be unveiled in Union Square, now towers above a different part of the city. The statue, the work of artist Marco Cochrane, was instead erected along the San Francisco Embarcadero.
Made from fabricated steel rod and tubing, the statue features two layers of geodesic triangles and is covered by stainless steel mesh, intended to create an interplay of light and form. According to project organizers, the sculpture symbolizes "feminine strength and empowerment."
The statue was first created for the 2015 Burning Man festival and was slated to stand in Union Square Park from Feb. 6 through the end of May. However, due to what Union Square Park officials called "unforeseen engineering complexities," the plan to unveil R-Evolution in Union Square was scrapped.
According to the San Francisco Examiner, there were concerns that the massive statue's weight could potentially crack granite tiles in the park plaza. The sculpture and base weigh around 13,000 pounds with the steel anchoring plate adding an additional 16,000 pounds.
With plans for the Union Square unveiling halted, the decision was made to put the statue up on the Embarcadero across from the SF Ferry Building. R-Evolution will be officially unveiled at the Embarcadero on Thursday, April 10 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
According to the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, the event will feature live music, a DJ, an artist market, a full bar, food, lighting by SF nonprofit Illuminate, and photo opportunities with the sculpture.
Cochrane, the Petaluma-based artist behind the sculpture, was born in Italy and raised in Northern California. The self-taught artist was inspired to enlarge his sculptures to a massive scale by visits to the Burning Man Festival in 2007 and 2009.
