Before there was Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake, or Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West, two other titans of popular music famously went head to head: Elton John and Madonna, who kept up a bitter back-and-forth for more than two decades before finally laying it to rest with a serendipitous peace meeting held backstage at Saturday Night Live.
And with more than 20 years of history between them, the rock legend and Queen of Pop are certainly leaving a lot of water under the bridge. Their story is rife with passive aggressive remarks and colorful insults — most of which, if we’re honest, came from Sir Elton and his imaginative vocabulary — and has also involved a couple other key players. Namely, the “Your Song” singer’s husband, David Furnish, has jumped in with his own disparaging comments about Madge, while Lady Gaga — who is godmother to Elton’s son Zachary — was roped into the narrative when Elton took issue with Madonna criticizing the “Poker Face” singer early on in her career (more on that later).
But all of that was set aside when Madonna decided to pay her former foe a visit at 30 Rock after hearing that he was scheduled to perform on SNL with Brandi Carlile. Per a post on Madge’s Instagram, the pair talked things out backstage and even resolved to collaborate in the future, with Madonna writing, “It was like everything came full circle.”
