I can’t tell you how much I stress about ensuring that meat is cooked properly. I like grilling and with warmer weather on the way, I know I’ll be spending more time over our grill. Even though I have a good instinct for grilling different types of meat and lots of practice, when I cook at night, it can be very difficult to judge how done a piece of meat is. This is where Meater — specifically the new Meater SE — has changed the way I grill.

    User Experience

I’ve been a fan of Meater since we reviewed the Meater Plus a few years ago. It’s made cooking meat — especially meals that involve a longer cook for meat — much easier and less nerve-wracking since the Meater is constantly monitoring your meat. Now you might ask yourself, what is the difference between the Meater SE and the Meater Plus — the two thermometers in the Alpha Collection. Here is a quick breakdown.

    Charger Material and Design:

MEATER SE: Features a durable black plastic charger, offering a sleek and modern look. MEATER Plus: Comes with a bamboo charger that includes a magnetic backing for easy attachment to metal surfaces.

    Personalization Options:

MEATER SE: Currently does not offer personalization features. MEATER Plus: Offers personalization options, allowing users to customize the charger with engravings or logos.

    Price Point:

MEATER SE: Positioned as an entry-level option with an affordable price, making it accessible for those new to smart meat thermometers. MEATER Plus: Priced higher due to its premium materials and additional features.

Aside from these differences, the two consumer-level Meater thermometers share the same features.

    Unboxing

The Meater SE comes in a simple cardboard box with a quick start manual. To get started with it, you make sure the charger has a AAA battery in it (one is included) and then you snap the Meater in its slot. On the initial use, you will want to let the thermometer charge for 2 hours before attempting to connect it to your phone. The weird part about this is that the charger doesn’t give any indication that the Meater is charging. When you remove it from the charger, the LED indicator will blink green letting you know that it’s connected to the charger via Bluetooth.

The next step is to connect it to the app, which walks you through the process. Once the thermometer is connected, you can start cooking. The entire concept of the Meater thermometers is that you place them in your food item and leave it while it cooks. I’ve used them while grilling and even in our Thanksgiving Turkey this past fall.

The beauty of the Meater Thermometers is that the app does most of the work. When you start using the Meater app, you’ll have a set of tutorial videos to walk through that describe the cooking, resting, and reverse searing timings. You can skip over these videos, but the prompt will continue to appear if you do. When you set up a cook, you select your type of meat and the app will provide the suggested timing depending on how you want it cooked. The selections are Beef, Pork, Poultry, Lamb, Fish, or Other (the ‘other’ icon is a dinosaur, which I found amusing).

To test out the Meater SE I grabbed a small piece of beef and cooked it in our oven under the broiler. I knew this would provide a quick, hot cook for the test, which is what I was hoping for. The meat’s internal temperature started around 36º and I was targeting 145º for a finishing temperature, which would make it around medium-to-medium/well since it was a small piece of meat.

One of the things that I was most intrigued by was how well the ambient temperature was detected from the moment the thermometer was inserted into the meat. It slowly climbed until the oven reached its optimum temperature (around 500º). When the ambient temperature was around 324º, the cooking estimate was updated and the timer updated to read 7 minutes. The app told me to take the meat out of the heat before it reached the target temperature but I wasn’t in the kitchen so it took me a little longer to get it out.

By the time the app told me the meat was ready to eat — meaning the resting period was over — the internal temp was actually 172º. I discovered that if the end of the Meater is resting on a cookie sheet or another surface that might be retaining heat, the ambient temperature doesn’t reduce like it should. I remedied that by setting the end of the thermometer on the edge of the cookie sheet I was using so that the thermometer could read the air temperature.

Since my initial test, I have also used the Meater SE to cook steak, hamburgers, and pork chops on the grill. In the oven, I used it with a whole chicken that I roasted. All in all the Meater SE did a great job of tracking the cooking time of my food and it completely takes the stress out of cooking for me.

    Conclusion

The MEATER SE delivers an impressive smart cooking experience with its 100% wireless design and intuitive companion app. It’s reliable, accurate, and makes cooking less stressful, even for beginners. While it lacks some of the premium aesthetics and customization options of the MEATER Plus, it retains all the core features that make MEATER products stand out. At $79.95, it’s a solid entry point into the world of smart meat thermometers and offers a lot of value for the price.
