Celebrating Easter in Inland Mendocino County

Easter, also called Pascha or Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD.

Easter marks the triumph of life over death and offers hope and renewal. It is a time for joy, feasting, and reflection, with traditions like church services, egg hunts, and special meals.

Easter is preceded by Holy Week, a period of remembrance and reflection on Jesus’ final days, including Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday (commemorating the Last Supper), Good Friday (the crucifixion), and Holy Saturday (the transition between crucifixion and resurrection).

Good Friday is called “good” because Christians believe it marks the day Jesus Christ died on the cross, which they see as a necessary sacrifice for humanity’s sins, representing God’s love and the ultimate act of redemption, leading to the hope of resurrection and eternal life.

The French word for Easter, Pâques, comes from the Greek word for Passover, which is the Jewish holiday celebrated at about the same time of the year.

The earliest recorded observance of an Easter celebration comes from the second century, though the commemoration of Jesus’ Resurrection probably occurred earlier.

Below is a list of area churches’ contact information, and, if available, Easter celebration events. Dates are: Maundy Thursday, April 17; Good Friday, April 18; Easter Sunday, April 20.
