Costco employees expose 10 most annoying checkout habits and why certain members should always choose ‘regular line’

SHOPPING at Costco can be an ordeal, but there are some things members can keep in mind to make the experience less stressful.

Costco employees have shared their advice on how to make Costco trips easier for everyone.

As of 2024, Costco employs around 330,000 workers.

With so many checkout processes being streamlined for efficiency, one small hiccup can throw everything off balance.

Some employees from the international warehouse wholesaler have shared their feedback on social media on how to make their jobs – and your shopping trips – a better experience for all involved.

Retail transactions are smoother when both the employee and the customer feel respected.

One of the most common complaints from employees is that customers are often rude or disrespectful, which can lead to problems and delays at the checkout.

“Packing groceries, I’ve been called stupid,” one Costco employee wrote on Reddit.

“Once a woman told her son that if he didn’t go to college he would end up doing my job. Which was pretty funny, because I have a bachelors degree, and the cashier has a masters.”

    2. KEEP THE AISLE CLEAR

Being mindful of your surroundings and not blocking traffic helps everyone move through the store more easily.

“Do NOT block the aisle,” one Redditor wrote.

“People have been trampled because they’re busy catching up with a friend, and impatient people are pushing past them, running their feet over with their carts.”

It can be easy to rack up a large bill at Costco if you’re not careful.

Keeping track of your spending helps to prevent unnecessary delays at the checkout line.

“‘Sir, I don’t know what to tell you,'” one Redditor wrote in a mock exchange.

“‘You brought me those items, I scanned them, it’s $127.. have a wonderful day.. next member.'”

    4. READ THE SIGNS

At Costco, going through the wrong door can delay you from getting into the store, and hold up other customers coming out.

One employee on Reddit shared that customers must always enter and exit through the proper designated area.

“You can NOT enter from the exit door, even if you have to return something,” the user wrote in a post.

“You go through the entrance, and THEN, the employee at the door has to let you go to the membership desk to return and get a refund. This is to help with the door count and make sure nobody is able to leave the store without being checked.”

Another way to make your Costco trip more hassle-free is to know which line to stand in.

“If you have a cart full of product, more than 10 items, it’s best to go to a cashier lane,” the user continued.

“Most self-checkout personnel have to help multiple people, but if you have a basket worth 200+ of product, you’re slowing them down.”

    6. DON’T OVERDO IT AT SCO

One major delay for both employees and customers is when members bring too many items to the self-checkout (SCO).

“I PROMISE that your cart full of 30+ items will get through a regular line much faster and with a lot less stress than going through SCO,” another employee wrote.

Costco employees must scan membership cards at the register, so having your card in your hand will make the process quicker.

“For me, it’s gotten to the point where I’m surprised when people actually do have it ready,” an employee wrote.

“We can’t scan anything until we’ve scanned your card so it’s best to have it ready before you start unloading.”

    8. THE HOT DOG IS A COMBO

Costco’s famous food court hot dogs automatically come with a drink.

However, some members don’t realize this until they’ve already paid, prompting unwanted setbacks for returns.

“So many people don’t read the signs that says ‘Drink+/Combo’ and we have to give out many refunds because members don’t want to read the signs.”

Before standing in line at the SCO, make sure you have the right payment method handy.

Self-checkouts do not accept cash – only VISA and Costco Credit cards.

Similarly, food courts only accept cash at the register. For credit card purchases, members must use the kiosk.

    10. THERE ARE TWO EXIT LINES

When leaving the store, some members may not realize that there are two separate exit lines.

During a shopping rush, crowds at the exit can get hectic.

It’s important to keep in mind that not everyone has to wait in the same line to leave with their purchases.

“The only thing I’d add is ‘There are TWO lines when you leave to show your receipt,” one Redditor wrote.

“TWO LINES. Just like last time and just like now and just like next time. But you will forget.”
