As Kalen DeBoer prepares for Year 2 in Tuscaloosa, he has plenty of questions to answer.
Alabama went just 9-4 last season, failing to win 10 games for the first time since 2007. But the questions for Nick Saban’s successor don’t just extend to the football field — DeBoer’s perceived lack of emotion on the sidelines also drew criticism from Alabama fans last year in the midst of a disappointing campaign.
Saban was often very demonstrative on the sidelines — toward players, officials or even his own coaching staff at times. That’s the sideline demeanor that Alabama fans knew and respected for 17 years.
But DeBoer has a more reserved approach. On Wednesday morning, he spoke with ESPN’s Chris Low about how he conducts himself during games.
“If there’s anyone I’m yelling at, it’s internally at myself,” DeBoer said. “Maybe the week of prep is different. But on Saturdays, we’re in the fight together. I learned way back not to overreact and keep guys focused.”

— Chris Low (@ClowESPN) April 9, 2025DeBoer’s approach has served him well so far in his coaching career. It brought him the kind of success necessary to land the Alabama job. He consistently won at all levels of college football before moving to Tuscaloosa last offseason.
As the saying goes, winning cures all. Alabama fans likely won’t be calling for more demonstrative outbursts from DeBoer if the Crimson Tide put together more consistent performances in 2025.
While the 2025 season is still a few months away, Alabama fans will get a glimpse of the 2025 team during A-Day festivities on April 13.
