Kenan Thompson appears to be living large as the longest-running cast member in the history of Saturday Night Live with 22 seasons, but privately he’s been battling his own personal health challenge of the last few years.
Thompson recently revealed that the problem, often painful acid reflux, was affecting his performance on the iconic late-night show, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

“I noticed that I would get hoarse a lot easier when I'm doing the show,” Thompson told People in a recent interview. “Losing my voice quicker, but also uncomfortable sleepless nights because I'm burping up acid, just kind of hiccuping all night. And that can definitely add more stress to an already stressful kind of environment doing a live show like that.”
Initially, Thompson , 46, thought it would go away. “I was like, ‘Whatever, I'll get over it.’ But it just started to pile up,” he added.
However, that didn’t work out and eventually he was diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the ailment where acid from the stomach comes back into the esophagus causing irritation.
“I was able to take something and patch it up for the moment, but I got to a point where that didn't work anymore,” Thompson revealed. “That's when it got serious. It was a suffering-in-silence situation.”
Thompson was able to curb the ailment once he realized “there was a real medical term for it” and was able to put the condition in check with a combination of medication and lifestyle changes.
“I felt relief pretty immediately,” Thompson told the outlet. “God bless, I feel great. I'm in a much healthier kind of space with my daily lifestyle and meal decision-making and all of that good stuff. I'm in a good place.”
