A Common Breakfast Staple Could Explain Your Sudden Weight Gain Over 60

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and no dish feels complete without eggs. Not only are eggs versatile—soft and creamy scrambled eggs are my favorite—they are packed with nutrients.

You might have had to pause making omelets recently because of rising egg prices earlier this year, but is it possible the egg shortage was a blessing in disguise? A study on postmenopausal women found that the classic breakfast item may sneakily add inches to your waistline.

About 50% of women experience weight gain during perimenopause or menopause, especially in the abdomen and upper body area. Staying at the usual weight gets harder every year, with women gaining an average of 1.5 pounds annually.

The drop in estrogen during menopause slows down metabolism and reduces muscle mass since estrogen is involved in muscle recovery efforts. Some studies also suggest weight gain in menopause stems from a reduced appetite for protein, which may increase the risk of overeating.

What You May Want To Avoid Eating Post-Menopause

If you’re looking to lose weight, eggs may be your egg-nemy. A study published in Clinical Nutrition found that postmenopausal weight gain was linked to increased egg and choline intake.

“There are many benefits eggs have on female health, including preventing cognitive decline according to recent research,” says Dr. James A. Greenberg, Ph.D., a professor of Health and Nutrition Sciences at CUNY Brooklyn College and lead study author. “However, the relationship between egg consumption and body weight in postmenopausal women has barely been explored.”

Researchers analyzed the health data of 4,439 women who took a food questionnaire and compared it to their body weight and BMI scores. During a six-year follow-up, the researchers noticed that the more eggs they ate, the more weight they gained.

By the third year, women who increased their consumption to two more eggs per week gained an additional 1.5 pounds compared to women who lowered their egg intake by 2.4 eggs per week. Eating foods high in cholesterol and choline was associated with weight loss. Egg yolk is a significant source of choline.

The women who were more likely to gain weight were also those who followed a “Western” diet high in red meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried foods and desserts. Interestingly, the researchers note genetics may influence egg-related weight gain. Weight gain from eggs occurred only in women genetically prone to obesity.

Since the study was done in European women, the researchers acknowledge that it is unclear whether women from other races and ethnicities have a similar outcome. Additionally, they say more studies are needed to validate this link between egg consumption and weight gain.
