In a massive achievement within the world of science, Colossal Biosciences has reportedly revived a long-extinct wolf species last seen during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene periods: I.E., approximately 125,000 to 10,000 years ago in Earth's past.
In a shocking turn of events, the American biotech company has formally announced that they've managed to spawn humanely three dire wolves -- a canine subspecies that died out roughly 10 millennia ago. Known for their drastically larger size compared to the average grey wolf, dire wolves were perhaps more famously known as the faithful companions to House Stark, the heroic Game of Thrones faction who adopted the animal as their official bannerhead.
Fittingly, the three dire wolves revived by Colossal have been named Remus, Romulus, and Khaleesi, the latter of whom is named after Daenerys Targaryen's royal title in HBO's flagship drama series. The latter wolves, of course, are named in honor of Rome's legendary founders, a pair of siblings raised by a protective she-wolf in ancient Roman mythology.
“I could not be more proud of the team. This massive milestone is the first of many coming examples demonstrating that our end-to-end de-extinction technology stack works,” Colossal CEO Ben Lamm said said of the era-defining accomplishment. “Our team took DNA from a 13,000 year old tooth and a 72,000 year old skull and made healthy dire wolf puppies. It was once said, ‘any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.’ Today, our team gets to unveil some of the magic they are working on and its broader impact on conservation.”
In the past, Colossal has made it its goal to revive animal species that have long since passed into extinction, with its ongoing objective rooted around resurrecting the woolly mammoth. In March, the company made serious headway in this ambitious project, introducing the world to the adorably fuzzy "colossal woolly mouse."
Colossal remains hopeful that the dire wolf's return will open the door for the de-extinction of other potential species, forever changing the nature of biotechnological sciences in the animal kingdom.
