Who Died in The White Lotus Season 3 Finale?

When The White Lotus first kicked off in 2021, Mike White immediately set a structural precedence. In the opening scene, a dead body would be shown. And by the final scene, we'll know whose it is.

Many variables have changed about the HBO drama, from locations to its cast of eccentric characters. But one thing has remained constant through three seasons: At least one death to cap off its finale. Season 3 took us out east to Thailand, where for eight weeks, we've witnessed more than one blast from the past, "brotherly love" in its most explicit fashion, and Parker Posey's immediately-memeable line deliveries. But, at the conclusion of tonight's massive 90-minute finale, we found out who among the characters would join Emmy winners Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge's Armond and Tanya McQuoid, as well as the "evil gays" of Season 2.

Here's who died on The White Lotus Season 3, and how it all went down.

Who died in The White Lotus Season 3 finale?

As the titular owner of the White Lotus alongside his wife Sritala (Lek Patravadi), Jim has largely been absent from the series, tending to some medical issues. But his presence has always been felt, namely with the story of Rick (Walton Goggins). You see, Rick came to the hotel to see Jim to carry out his revenge, alleging that he had killed his father, driving his life down a perilous and miserable path to where he is today.

In Episode 7, Rick finally carries out his plan in Bangkok. He recruits Frank (Sam Rockwell) to pose as a film director, showing feigned interest in casting Sritala in one of his movies. That gave Rick the time to sneak away with Jim, where he held him at gunpoint to deliver his entire story. In the end, Rick got what he wanted, leaving the old man startled and lying on the floor in shock.

But while Rick was done with Jim, the reverse was far from true. Jim visited the hotel in the finale, planning to meet celebrity Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan). The two men encountered each other again at breakfast, in which Jim dresses Rick down. He does remember his mother after all, and remarks that Rick's picture of his absentee father is incorrect. He was no saint, and he would regard him as quite the opposite if he knew who he really was.

Feeling the pressure mounting, Rick attempts to seek out spiritual guidance, only to be left high and dry. At that moment of emotional depravity, he sees Jim posing for the pic with Jaclyn. And, seeing red, he walks over to Jim, grabs his gun, and fires two shots straight into his chest. As Sritala cradles the body of her dead husband, she asks Rick why he committed the murder.

"He killed my father," he replied.

"He's your father," she cried in response.

    Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood)

Unfortunately, Rick didn't have time to sit in the shock of that twist ending. Soon, he's involved in a firefight with the Hollingers' bodyguards. Going into action mode, he grabs girlfriend Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood), who followed him when he bolted from breakfast. What follows is a shootout that puts Goggins right back in the world of Justified, as Rick tries to wiggle his way out of this situation.

The good news is he does, successfully dispatching the bodyguards. The bad news: Chelsea didn't. She stands there silent, in shock, as she's taken several bullets in the fray. The Brit has been the metaphoric Cassandra this entire season, predicting that something bad would happen to her, and events always come in threes. There was the robbery that held her at gunpoint once before, and she got bit by a poisonous snake during a trip to a local village. But the best – and most lethal – event was saved for last, as she died in Rick's arms.

    Rick Hatchett (Walton Goggins)

To say Rick is distraught would be an understatement. It was his quest for revenge, and his penchant to fly off the handle, that ended up with both his father and the love of his life dead. Catatonic, he picks up Chelsea's body, walking her slowly across the bridge.

It's at that moment when Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) appears. The security guard had heard the gunfire and instinctively grabbed the one that was at the booth. He's stunned upon seeing Jim's dead body, but is brought out of the shock by Sritala screaming at him to find and kill Rick. It doesn't take Gaitok very long, as he spies the couple processing. At Sritala's request, despite his recent declarations of pacifism, he successfully shoots Rick in the back, killing him.

Earlier in the episode, Rick and Chelsea promised each other that they would be together forever. Indeed, they are, floating alongside each other in the pond. While Chelsea is facing down, Rick looks up to the bright Thai sun. And, for perhaps the first meaningful time on The White Lotus, Rick Hatchett smiles.
