Seth Greenberg claims Buzz Williams and Trev Alberts never spoke to each other

During a segment on ESPN’s College GameDay Saturday afternoon, Seth Greenberg made an eyebrow-raising claim.

Greenberg, Jay Bilas, and Jay Williams were talking about the coaching carousel and how to best slow down the constant turnover that happens every offseason in college basketball. Greenberg, referencing Buzz Williams’ surprise move from Texas A&M to Maryland, claimed the Aggies former head coach never spoke with A&M athletic director Trev Alberts.

“Coaches change jobs for a lot of different reasons. Coaches change jobs to get a better job, just like players change schools to get a better job. … That happens. That’s not a problem,” Greenberg said on GameDay. “I’m going to use Buzz Williams as an example. He hasn’t talked to his athletic director in a year. In 1 year, he hasn’t talked to his athletic director. That relationship, once your relationship … deteriorates, it’s a win-win for the school, the coach, and the program. That’s just the way it is.”

Host Rece Davis then took a moment and asked Greenberg to clarify if he was claiming that Williams and Alberts, who was named as the Texas A&M AD on March 13, 2024, never spoke to each other during their time together.

“My communication is he’s had 1 conversation with him all year,” Greenberg reiterated. “And that’s from a very, very good source. I had 1 conversation with Jim Weaver my last year. One.”

Greenberg’s final season at Virginia Tech ended when he was fired by Weaver, then the Hokies’ athletic director, in a surprise press conference. Greenberg had coached the Hokies for 9 seasons and said at the time he was “completely shocked and blindsided” by the move.

Williams’ jump to Maryland came as a similar surprise. Reporting even before the Maryland job came open suggested that Williams was angling to take over the Terps program if and when former Maryland head coach Kevin Willard left. For whatever it might be worth, Williams did not directly name Alberts in a note shared on social media, addressing only “the administration” at Texas A&M.

In April 2019, Texas A&M hired Williams from Virginia Tech. Just weeks later, the athletic director who hired him, Scott Woodward, left for LSU. Williams also worked under Ross Bjork, who left in 2024 to take the same position at Ohio State. Alberts was the third athletic director Williams worked under in his 6 seasons with the program.
