Arizona State seeking approval for contract extension, raise for AD Graham Rossini

Arizona State will on Thursday propose a contract extension and raise for athletic director Graham Rossini, per Board of Regents agenda filings.

Rossini’s current contract runs through the end of June 2027, and the proposal would extend it to 2030.

It would also increase his base salary from $650,000 to $950,000 and up his annual increase from $50,000 to $100,000, effective on July 1 of this year.

Additionally, many of the performance-based bonuses have proposed tweaks to allow compensation for higher-end success.

For example, where his previous contract included bonuses for conference championship appearances in football ($50,000), it would now include a bonus for winning the conference championship ($60,000).

Similar additions would come for winning bowl games and College Football Playoff appearances, as well as for postseason success in the other sports.

Rossini, a Sun Devil alumni, was officially named athletic director in May 2024, taking over for Ray Anderson.

In his first school year leading the athletic department, it has seen four Big 12 championships (football, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s swim and dive) in the school’s first season in the conference, the most conference championships ASU has had in a single school year since 2007-08.

While on the job, Rossini has negotiated contract extensions for football coach Kenny Dillingham and women’s volleyball coach JJ Van Niel. He has also hired women’s tennis coach Jamea Jackson and more recently women’s basketball coach Molly Miller.

The contract amendment would come with a $100,000 merit bonus if approved.

What safeguards are in place should Arizona State run into NCAA violations?

Should ASU run into NCAA violations like the ones Anderson and Herm Edwards left the football program with a few years ago, provisions will still be in place that give the university the right to terminate for cause without any remaining financial burden.

One of the proposed tweaks is increasing the amount Rossini can pay back to the university to account for any monetary sanctions — whether by the NCAA or conferences — from $50,000 to $250,000.

If ASU terminates the contract without cause, it would be required to pay any unpaid portion of his retention bonuses ($200,000 within 30 days after the 2027-28 school year and $300,000 at the end of the contract in June 2030).

If Rossini is the one that terminates the contract, such as if he left for another program, he would be required to pay a $950,000 buyout if done so before June 30, 2026. The amount would decrease by $200,000 each year and be nothing if done so in the final year.

At the same meeting on Thursday, ASU is seeking approval for Miller on a deal that would run through April 2030.

Miller’s base salary would start at $750,000 and increase by $25,000 annually for three seasons before a $75,000 jump to $900,000 in the contract’s final season. There’s an additional annual retention bonus of $100,000.

Bonuses are in place for postseason success, coach of the year recognitions and academic success for the players, including the number of players enrolled in Barrett, the Honors College.

If her contract is terminated for cause, Miller may be required to pay up to $250,000 in damages enacted by NCAA or conference violations. If done so without cause, she would be owed 100% of her remaining annual salary, but that would go down 50% if she accepted another Power 4 head coaching job.

Should she leave of her own accord, she would need the approval of ASU to be named head coach at another Big 12 school during the span of the contract. She would also owe deescalating amounts back to ASU, first at $1 million if done so in Year 1 ($800,000 in Year 2, $650,000 in Year 3, $450,000 in Year 4 and nothing in Year 5).

The contract would go into effect on May 1 if approved.
