Lunatask is a Focused, All-in-One Productivity Companion
I’m one of those people who use multiple notepads to keep my various to-do lists organized. As much as physically writing a task done does help me remember, I’ve started noticing that when I flip my calendar/notebook to the next week, my to-do list doesn’t carry over. The best solution to this is to use a digital task list.
My company uses a project management system (Teamwork), which is great for managing projects, but when it comes to all the tasks that flutter in and out of my head on a daily basis, I need something that is simpler to use while still being a robust tool. I was first introduced to Lunatask a couple of years ago and at the time, it didn’t suite my needs. Now, many, many updates have been made and I’m really loving how Lunatask is filling a void for me in my digital tools.
About Lunatask
Lunatask was created out of a personal passion for productivity apps. Initially, the developer built it for himself but later left his job at a unicorn startup to pursue it full-time.
Lunatask stands out by being an all-in-one productivity app that prioritizes user privacy with end-to-end encryption and no tracking. It also caters to neurodivergent users with features like mood tracking and journaling. The app includes a unique prioritization algorithm that nudges users to complete tasks before starting new ones.
Developed since 2019, Lunatask became Mike’s full-time project in 2021. It runs on Electron for cross-platform support, with mobile apps in development using React Native. The app is community-driven, with features shaped by user feedback. More details, including security practices, prioritization methods, and the development roadmap, are available on its website.
Another very unique feature about the development of Lunatask is that the developer wanted to tailor the app to the needs of neurodivergent people in order to help track their mental health with journaling, mood and energy trackers, which are all built in.
The developer is constantly trying to improve his product and will collect dat from user feedback through the Idea Voting Portal, in the Slack Community, or through all the built-in feedback options.

Contact Info Identifiers DiagnosticsThe full privacy policy can be found here. Lunatask does operate with end-to-end encryption and does not implement any tracking. According to the developer, “I wanted to focus on user privacy. There’s no reason for Lunatask to know who its users are, what they do inside of Lunatask, and no one should have access to their data.”
User Experience
Setting up Lunatask is very easy. I downloaded it from the App Store (both macOS and iOS) and then entered my email and master password. When you enter your email, you are sent a passcode that must be entered before you enter your master password. Also, when I downloaded it on my work computer (also a MacBook Pro), I had to generate an app-specific password from Apple since it that computer uses a different iCloud account.
Lunatask has quickly become a central part of how I manage both personal and work tasks. The interface is clean and straightforward, which makes it easy to capture tasks as they come up—especially ones that come through email. I really like how everything stays organized without feeling overwhelming or overcomplicated.
One feature I’ve found especially useful is the journal. I’ve started using it at the end of each day to note what I worked on, which makes it much easier to track my weekly hours for billing. It’s a small habit that’s made a big difference—now I don’t have to rely on memory when it’s time to record my time.
One thing I noticed while using the journaling feature was that there was no quick entry option for creating a task. I think this would be a great add-on because as someone is journaling, the natural flow of thoughts usually lead to additional to-do items. I know it would help me if as I’m writing I could quickly drop a to-do into the list without having to leave the journal area. Maybe using a markdown command or just having a sidebar area for quick to-dos would work for this. (NOTE: I did submit an idea to the Idea Portal.)
The Relationships feature is a very interesting way to handle a CRM. It focuses more on the actual relationship and not the transaction. It’s designed so that you can identify opportunities to reconnect with the person and it really highlights the pieces of information that help form the relationship such as birthdate, phone number, social profile, etc. In this area, you can also add notes and happy memories, which I thought was a very nice way to define the relationship.
Overall, Lunatask feels thoughtfully designed and practical. It helps me stay focused and on top of things without getting in the way. There is a lot to this app system, but it isn’t overcomplicated and the interface is very clean.
Conclusion
Lunatask has evolved into a powerful, privacy-first productivity tool that hits the sweet spot between simplicity and depth. It’s not just another to-do list app—it’s a thoughtfully crafted system that blends task management, journaling, habit tracking, and even relationship building into one cohesive space. For users like me who are juggling personal and work responsibilities, it offers a flexible and reliable way to stay organized without becoming cluttered or overwhelming.
While there are still areas that could be refined—like quick task entry during journaling—the developer’s ongoing commitment to user feedback and active development gives me confidence that Lunatask will only continue to improve. It’s a tool I now rely on daily, and I’m glad to have found something that fits so seamlessly into my workflow.
