Texas A&M coaching search: Fans, media mixed over reported Aggies hire

Texas A&M is reportedly nearing a move to hire Samford’s Bucky McMillan to be its next head men’s basketball coach.

McMillan will replace Buzz Williams, who left to take the open Maryland job. He has spent the last 5 years at Samford, where he went 99-52 and led the program to 2 regular-season Southern Conference championships, 1 conference tournament championship. In 2024, he won a program-record 29 games and took Samford to its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2000.

The Samford gig is McMillan’s only Division I experience. Before coaching the Bulldogs, McMillan spent 12 years as a high school basketball coach in the state of Alabama. McMillan was incredibly successful at the high school level, but he’s not exactly the flashiest hire and expectations in College Station will be significant.

Of course, grabbing the biggest name or the most expensive coach to lead a program doesn’t guarantee results. Samford gambled on a high school coach with a specific system — Bucky Ball — and enjoyed 4 consecutive 20-win seasons as a result. Texas A&M could find similar success. Some across social media were excited about the potential for McMillan at the helm of the Aggies program.

Others are a little less sure.

Below, you’ll find a sampling of the reaction to McMillan’s reported hire.

There is definitely some fire in the Bucky McMillan to Texas A&M smoke. The Aggies would be lucky to get one of the best young coaches in college basketball.

Bucky McMillan became a HS varsity coach at age 25 and proceeded to win FIVE state titles in 12 seasons. Then went to Samford and led them to two regular season conference titles (their only ones this century) along with four straight 20-in seasons after they'd only had two… t.co/wWcbMgCkoz

Bucky McMillan won’t be the name that gets people hyped up but I expect the product on the court willThe last two years, his teams have averaged over 80 ppg. Shooting and making lots of threes. It will be a big contrast to what we saw with Buzz the last few years

Really big on this hire of Bucky McMillan, but he now has to go out and quickly build a staff and roster in relatively quick order.Plays a fun and extremely fast-paced brand of basketball, and is a proven winner at multiple levels. Pretty excited to see what he does.

This is an extremely ballsy hire by Trev Alberts. This is not safe. This is not boring. Could be an outstanding hire. It could be a an absolute disaster. Bucky McMillan is a really sharp dude though.

Mixed feelings but mostly positive.Bucky is a great modern coach that uses unique styles & I am excited to see how he can translate it to the SEC. Super smart young dude who will succeed to some level for sure t.co/VepJlDZTsW

Nicknamed “Bucky Ball,” the style of Bucky McMillan-coach teams is a lot of fun (and should be a breath of fresh air compared to Buzz). They are relentless with their fullcourt press after made baskets, use a frenetic tempo offensively and put an emphasis on 3-point shooting.
