The little-known clause in Stefon Diggs’ $69 million New England Patriots contract which means he can be cut TODAY

THE New England Patriots have given themselves some protection in Stefon Diggs’ contract he signed last month.

The 31-year-old Diggs‘ $69 million contract could be ripped apart thanks to an uncommon clause.

After a 2024 campaign that saw the then-Houston Texans wideout Diggs suffer a torn ACL, the four-time Pro Bowler joined the Patriots on a three-year, $69 million deal with $29 million guaranteed.

He will be making $23 million a season, but there’s a catch.

NBC‘s Mike Florio reported, “per source with knowledge of the terms of Diggs’ contract, the Patriots have secured broad protection against a setback during Diggs’s ongoing rehab of his torn ACL from the 2024 season.”

The report added that the deal “contains a waiver regarding his right knee ” and that his gurantted money doesn’t apply “to any NFL football-related injury sustained by Player while performing services under this Contract that, in the sole opinion of the Club’s physician, which shall be final and binding, is in any way related to a deterioration, aggravation or re-injury” to the pre-existing injury to the right knee.”

Florio shared that the Patriots can terminate Diggs’ deal “due to the pre-existing injury” unless he passes a physical.

And if Diggs reinjures his right knee, the Patriots will not be charged for the guaranteed money.

A similar clause has been put in contracts in the past.

In 2023, the Las Vegas Raiders signed veteran quarterback Jimmy Garappolo to a three-year, $67 million contract that has specific protections concerning a pre-existing injury.

Nonetheless, the Patriots don’t owe Diggs a cent until he passes his physical.

Before tearing his ACL, Diggs posted 496 receiving yards and three touchdowns along with 47 receptions.

The injury led to the end of his streak of six straight seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards.

Diggs also posted four straight seasons of at least 100 receptions and eight touchdowns before 2024.

He has earned $137 million during his career, which started in 2015.

Diggs will be part of a Patriots squad that won just four games last year.

However, the Patriots have been the most active team in free agency, giving out $380 million in contracts.

Their biggest contract was given to former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams, who penned a four-year, $104 million deal.

New England will look to become a playoff team for the first time since 2021.

They’ll hope for a stellar season from their franchise quarterback, 2024 first-round pick Drake Maye.
