The Kings and prospect forward Kenny Connors agreed to terms on an entry-level contract, the team announced Thursday.
It’s a two-year pact for the 22-year-old, who just completed his third season at the University of Massachusetts.
His Minutemen were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA tournament by Kings prospect goalie Hampton Slukynsky and Western Michigan after topping Minnesota in a Round 1 overtime win.
The 2022 fourth-rounder (No. 103 overall) joined another 2022 pick, Finnish defenseman Otto Salin, in signing his entry-level deal. While Salin was added to the Ontario Reign’s roster earlier this week, Connors’ union with the Kings’ top minor-league affiliate may have to wait depending on his health. Kings blog Mayor’s Manor reported that he is dealing with a foot injury sustained while blocking a shot.
Connors was a Hockey East all-rookie selection with 26 points in 32 games. He set career highs last season with 10 goals and 29 points in 40 contests, though Connors’ calling cards are his competitiveness and comprehensive effort.
“I strive to be a 200-foot player who can play in all three zones and be trusted at all times in the game,” Connors told Kings Insider Zach Dooley. “A lot like the guys the Kings have like Anže Kopitar and Philip Danault, they’re two of the best two-way centers in the NHL. That is the game I try and play, someone who is responsible defensively but can also produce offensively and score goals consistently. Having guys like Kopitar and Danault makes it easy to watch and try to model my game after.”
The native of Glen Mills, Pa. came up through the Philadelphia Flyers junior system, from ages 5 to 16, when he attended prep school and then played in the United States Hockey League.
Jared Wright, another 2022-drafted prospect forward with bottom-six projections and high character, could be the next King to sign. His University of Denver Pioneers are still alive in the tournament, set to face Western Michigan next Thursday.
