Diogo Dalot reveals Ruben Amorim spoke Portuguese to entire Man United squad at first and reveals biggest strength

Diogo Dalot has praised Ruben Amorim’s honesty whilst opening up on life under the Manchester United head coach.

The Portuguese coach has had a challenging start to life at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils sitting 13th in the Premier League table having struggled for consistency since his arrival in November.

Ruben Amorim is yet to record back-to-back league wins in charge of Manchester United

A bumpy first few months at the helm has seen United lose 10 of Amorim’s 29 games in charge so far.

But there have been signs of improvement lately, with his side experiencing a mini-revival after going seven matches unbeaten before defeat to Nottingham Forest in their last match.

And despite his early struggles, Amorim certainly looks to have the support of his players.

That is even after he found himself accidentally speaking to the entire United squad in Portuguese to begin with.

Full-back Dalot has revealed the 40-year-old initially found it hard to switch from his mother tongue after making the move to the north west of England from Sporting Lisbon.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT’s The Kickback from Old Trafford ahead of this weekend’s Manchester derby, the Portugal international recalled Amorim’s early days in the job.

Smiling, he said: “It was funny because sometimes he was so used to it in the beginning, to speak Portuguese, that he would start speaking Portuguese to all the players.

“And the players were like: ‘Boss, come on, you’re speaking [Portuguese]’. And he was like: ‘Oh, sorry!’

“And he started already with English, but it’s a normal adaptation, I’ve been there. When I arrived, it was exactly the same.”

Dalot also revealed the United boss’ commitment to overcoming the language barrier to ensure all of his players felt included.

He continued: “I think it [speaking English] was something that he obviously tried to make sure as soon as he arrived, to adapt really quick for everybody not to feel [left out].

“Obviously sometimes it’s easier for him to communicate in Portuguese in the first few months.

“But now I think it became completely normal for him to speak English.”

And it’s fair to say Amorim’s personal qualities have left their mark on Dalot, who highlighted the coach’s honesty as his biggest strength.

The 26-year-old said of him: “I think it’s one of the best compliments that you can give about him, is that he’s really honest.

“I think you can see that when he speaks, he’s not trying to give the right answer. He just speaks from the heart.

“And it’s difficult for a manager to always be completely honest. But I think it’s something that since I’ve known him as a manager, he’s always been like that.

He went on: “And then, people will judge him by his words, by his actions. But that’s part of football.

“We, football players, will be judged by what we do on the pitch. So as a manager, you’re always exposed to that. But I think he’s a really good communicator, so he will be fine.”

Since taking charge, the former Sporting boss has refused to shy away from difficult topics, openly naming his teams’ issues.

In January, Amorim described his current squad squad as ‘Maybe the worst team in the history of Manchester United‘, before later having to backtrack on his comments.

But his direct approach looks to have won over his players, with Dalot also saying of him: “But overall, I think apart from being a good manager, he’s a very good person.

“And I think the players feel that and all the stuff.”
