The 76-year-old told ABC affiliate WTAE that she purchased a Cash 5 lottery ticket at a grocery store in Murrysville, Pa. in May 2024. Two weeks later when she realized that she had hit it big and won $2.5 million with the ticket, she was overjoyed.
Unfortunately for Simoneriluto, she couldn’t find the ticket. She believes that she left it in the pocket of a jacket that she donated to charity.
“There's no words for it,” she said, detailing that she was “stupefied” upon realization. “It was beyond expression.”
Simoneriluto said she donated the piece of clothing to a charitable organization called Vietnam Veterans of America, which distributes donations not just nationally but globally.
Though she’s returned to the grocery store where she purchased the winning ticket “maybe a hundred times” in the hopes of finding another way of claiming her prize, she said they told her “there's nothing they could do.”
The winning ticket needs to be located by May 8 in order for the winnings to be claimed. Simoneriluto told the outlet that she understands that if someone else finds the ticket and turns it in, they can claim it for themselves. “What else can I do?” she said. “Cry out loud and hope that something will happen positive on my end.”
