There has been a lot of talk about the pitch recently, as surface-related controversies have made headlines. KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane‘s debate with Eden Gardens pitch curator Sujan Mukherjee sparked controversy after it came to light that the skipper expressed his desire for a more ‘spin-friendly’ pitch at Eden Gardens. However, there was some disagreement from the curator.
Now, it seems all is well for the skipper, as he himself stated at the toss that they are “really happy with the pitch.” However, he also emphasised the importance of assessing the conditions quickly to adapt and perform well. In their last match against MI, KKR struggled in Mumbai, but now, playing at home, they will look to capitalise on familiar conditions against Pat Cummins’ SRH.
“Happy with the pitch, but need to assess quickly”
“Looks good, I’m really happy with the pitch, we were also bowling first. It will suit our spinners, at home, you should get what you want, but we’ll need to assess the situation quickly with the bat. We sat together, discussed how we can get better, but this is a long tournament and it was one bad day. Moeen Ali comes in place of Spencer Johnson. Regardless of all plans, we’ll have to come out and do well in the middle.”
In short, Rahane is all set and certainly satisfied with the pitch, mentioning that he would have opted to bowl first. However, SRH skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to send KKR in to bat first. Speaking about the pitch, Rahane expects the surface to favour spinners, which could be a reason why they have gone with Moeen Ali once again. Acknowledging their off-day against MI, he emphasised the need for fearless cricket and smart adaptability.
