Shannon Sharpe and Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson have questioned the way Jerry Jones is negotiating an extension for Micah Parsons.
The Dallas Cowboys owner said this week that he would rather get the contract right than rush the deal, but suggested he is speaking directly with the linebacker and not his agent, David Mulugheta.
“I’m the one who has to sign the check, and Micah’s the one that has to agree to it,” Jones said.
“That’s the straightest way to get to it is the one writing the check and the one agreeing to it talking, and that’s the principal that’s involved here.”
According to reports, Dallas’ star edge rusher is seeking a $200 million contract, which would be the largest deal ever for a non-quarterback.
However, soon after Jones’ comments went public, Parsons took to social media and stated he wouldn’t agree to any deal without his agent’s involvement.
“David is the best and I will not be doing any deal without David Mulugheta involved,” he wrote on X.
“Like anyone with good sense I hired experts for a reason. There is no one I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David! There will be no backdoors in this contract negotiation.”
Sharpe and Johnson broke down the ongoing situation on Wednesday’s episode of Nightcap, warning that Jones’ attempt to deal with Parsons rather than his agent is worrying.
“That’s the problem in Dallas now, why wouldn’t you want to do a contract the right way and have a middle man – the agent – look at the language?” Johnson began.
“No owner ever does a contract with the player himself.”
Sharpe then chimed in: “Jerry ain’t writing that contract, he’s got lawyers writing the contract. You see what Jerry’s trying to do? Jerry thinks he’s slick.

“Mulugheta has to read through it. Then he’s got to have his number two read through it to make sure he didn’t miss anything.
“Then you have a number three look through it, to make sure the first two didn’t miss anything. Because you want to go over everything with a fine tooth-comb.
“When you’re dealing with this kind of money, I don’t want to give you any of it back. I don’t want no offset language, you’re not putting none of that in there.”
Johnson, meanwhile, echoed that teams will try to ‘claw some money back’ with certain contract clauses.
He continued: “It’s funny, when it comes to contract talks, it lets you know how owners really feel about you. You’re part of the team.
“But when it comes to contract talks and negotiations, it lets you know how management, GMs and owners really feel about you when it’s time to get paid.

Shape and Johnson went on to take issue with Jones trying to ‘circumvent’ Mulugheta in the negotiations.
“Why are you trying to circumvent him by saying, ‘Oh, the best way to do things…’ That isn’t how it works, Jerry,” the Hall of Fame tight end said.
“I’m glad Micah spoke up, I hope he sticks to his guns and doesn’t let Jerry try to backdoor with something slick. That’s what you hire David Mulugheta for.”
The pair concluded their discussion by emphasising the importance of NFL stars having ‘somebody they can trust’ in their corner, because they have heard ‘too many horror stories’ about players being burned in the past.
While he has drawn the ire of Sharpe and Johnson for his negotiations so far, Jones has insisted he does not believe a deal between the Cowboys and Parsons is far off.
He said the star pass rusher called him from Abu Dhabi to set up a meeting and within the past two weeks, they met for ‘five or six hours’ to discuss a long-term extension.
“Most of the issues we are in agreement on. We discussed it all,” Jones insisted.
