Austin cast, filming locations and episode guide for new BBC comedy

Australian comedy show Austin has arrived at the BBC with a heart-warming take on families, fame and neurodiversity.

Ben Miller and Sally Phillips star as a high-profile literary couple Julian and Ingrid on the brink of being cancelled after a social media faux-pas in Australia.

    Thrown into this heady mix is the arrival of Austin, a man who claims to be Julian’s biological son.

    When much-loved children’s author Julian Hartswood (Ben Miller) inadvertently causes a social media storm, his writing career and that of his illustrator wife Ingrid (Sally Phillips) appears to be over.

    That is until Austin (Michael Theo), the neurodivergent son Julian never knew existed, turns up out of the blue while they are on a tour of Australia.

    Not only is this a surprise to Julian but it raises important questions about the timing of conception for Ingrid.

    While Julian starts to embrace his modern nuclear family in a bid to rehabilitate his career, Ingrid has her own passions to pursue.

    And in the midst of it all, Austin proves he’s no pushover but may in fact be the one who saves the day.

    British comedian, actor and author Miller, 59, rose to fame as one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller. He then moved into acting and has starred in The Worst Week of my Life, Popetown, Death in Paradise, Horrible Histories and Bridgerton on television. And he played Angus Bough in the Johnny English movies and the Colonel in the Paddington films.

    As an author, he has written 12 children’s and two science books.

    Sally Phillips plays Ingrid Hartswood, illustrator and wife to Julian.

    Actress and comedian Phillips, 54, rose to prominence in the television series Smack the Pony.

    She has gone on to star in shows such as Rescue Me, Green Wing, Jam & Jerusalem, Miranda, Veep, Zapped, Tourist Trap and Queenie. She also plays Shazza in the Bridget Jones movies.

    Michael Theo plays Austin Hogan, who claims to be the Australian son of Julian.

    The Australian actor will be well known to television audiences after his appearance in the reality show Love on the Spectrum Australia in 2019.

    Since then, the 31-year-old has in the television series Hardball and started his own podcast Mr A+ about his life with autism.

    Gia Carides plays Mel Hogan, Austin’s mother.

    The Australian actress, 60, starred as Liz Holt in the 1992 film Strictly Ballroom. She has also appeared Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movies.

    On television, she played Melissa in Big Little Lies, Veronica in Filthy Rich and reprised her role of Nikki in My Big Fat Greek Life.

    Austin was filmed in the Australian capital city Canberra and partly in London.

    The show starts with Julian and Ingrid on a book tour in Australia and this is when they first encounter Austin.

    Canberra’s iconic concrete bus shelters, designed by architect Clem Cummings, get full coverage in the show with Austin pictured waiting at one on King George Terrace in the suburb of Parkes.

    Austin’s alternative bookstore The True Reader is actually the second-hand bookshop Book Lore in the suburb of Lyneham.

    And it’s not the only book shop to get its five minutes of fame. The National Library of Australia’s bookshop, complete with stained glass windows, was also used in filming. While the library itself was used as the London-based office spaces in the show.

    The manicured gardens and stunning 20s architecture of the heritage-listed Hyatt Hotel Canberra played the part of the “Canberra Hotel”.

    Iconic The Marion restaurant was used as the setting for the hotel’s restaurant and the Rebel Rebel restaurant in the city doubled as a London restaurant.

    Finally, the Australian Parliament House also made it into some of the scenes in the show.

    How many episodes of Austin are there and when is it on?

    The eight-part comedy series Austin starts on BBC One on Friday 4 April at 9.30pm.

    Episodes will be shown on successive Fridays at the same time week.

    They will also be available to stream on the BBC iPlayer.
