SEATTLE – It is difficult to nail down precisely when the bromance between Elon Musk and Donald Trump began.
We do know that by the time Trump survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania in July 2024, the Tesla co-founder was ready to throw in his backing and endorse him without any caveat.
“I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” he wrote on X, alongside a video of the Republican former president standing and raising his fist after being shot in the ear.
From there, there was no stopping them.
Musk “interviewed” Trump in a conversation that spread over two hours and during which the 78-year-old praised the world’s wealthiest man for the ruthless way he had fired recalcitrant employees.
Musk poured in more than $100m to help Trump win, and appeared on stage with him at Mar-a-Lago after he secured a second term.
Trump had often suggested Musk could lead an effort to root out waste in the government, but few envisaged the 53-year-old would be granted a seat so close to the president-elect.
Nobody really thought Musk and his team of 20-something coders would be less loose on so much of the government infrastructure – firing workers at will, chaotically closing down entire departments and allegedly threatening everything from the safety of the country’s nuclear weapons stockpile, to combatting the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa.
By one count, the Musk and his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are responsible for the firing or forcing out, of around 200,000 employees, as his blunt approach reverberated across the government.
When DOGE was established, it was said it would look to save the tax-payer as much as $1trn.
Its website currently claims it has saved a total of $140bn, or $869.57 for every tax-payer.
However many of the “receipts” posted were taken down after the media, and Democrats, pointed out they were not as claimed.
The New York Times ran one article headlined: See How Elon Musk’s Team Inflated, Deleted and Rewrote Its Savings Claims.
But while some have doubted such figures, questions have also been raised about the cost of firing so many people and how much the government will have to pay those dispatched workers.

While frustration with Musk had been growing at the White House and among senior Republicans for some time, it is not clear what was the final factor for Trump to make his decision.
Polls – and and a number of angry town hall meetings with constituents – showed that even Republicans who still liked Trump, had had enough of Musk, who was only supposed to be in the role for 130 days, according to the terms of being a special employee.
Trump hinted this week Musk was on his way out.
“He’s got a big company to run. At some point he’s going to be going back. He wants to,” he said on Tuesday.

After the results of Tuesday’s Wisconsin Supreme Court race in which Musk ploughed $20m but where the Republican lost, it seems the sheen may be fading even for Trump.
“Elon Musk and President Trump have both publicly stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
Now Musk will be heading back to Tesla, whose stock has fallen and whose dealerships have been attacked across the US and around the world, in violent protest about the Trump administration’s actions.
As with many, or all, of Trump’s relationships, everything was transactional and only lasted as long as it was of value to him.
In truth, it was always a bit of a miracle that two such shameless attention seekers could get along for so long and share the same spotlight.
