Former San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate has been named the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s next president and CEO.
The chamber’s former president and CEO, former San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, retired at the end of 2024, prompting the search for a new leader.
During his time representing District 6 on the council, from 2014-2022, Cate championed over 24 policies pertaining to economic development, which the chamber said worked toward fostering a business-friendly environment in the region.
Citing his active collaboration with the chamber and their partners in working to elevate the business community, officials said Cate’s “extensive experience and proven track record” solidified his qualifications for the position.
Prior to his time on the council, Cate served as vice president, interim president and CEO of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association.
“In addition to his strong business background, Chris has demonstrated the ability to build effective coalitions within our business community and has been successful at working with government at all levels to deliver results,” said Chris Howard, chair of the chamber’s board and president/CEO of Sharp HealthCare. “These qualities will be essential as we represent the ever-changing needs of large and small businesses across our diverse San Diego business community.”
After his time in elected office, Cate founded 3MC Strategies, a public policy and business development firm with healthcare representatives and non-profit organizations among the clients
“I look forward to working alongside our dedicated board and staff to advocate for policies that help businesses thrive, drive economic growth, and strengthen our region,” Cate said. “By championing innovation, opportunity and collaboration, we are building a brighter future for San Diego’s business community and the people it serves.”
Jessica Anderson had served as interim president and CEO after Sanders’ departure.
