Around 400,000 students are sitting for the exams for the Basic Education, Religious Education certificates, and the Vocational Secondary Certificate in Syria, at a time when the Syrian Ministry of Education is striving to ensure the examination process.
The examination process began today, Saturday, June 21, for the General and Religious Basic Education diplomas and the Vocational Secondary diploma for the 2025 session.
More than 398,000 students are participating, distributed across 2,216 examination centers, according to the official SANA news agency.
The Basic Certificate exams will continue until July 9, with approximately 380,000 students taking part.
At the same time, the Vocational Secondary exams, covering industrial, commercial, and women’s branches, will run until July 10, with 18,591 students participating.
Today, students took the subject of General Science and Health (Biology) as proposed by the Ministry of Education in an automated format.
Typically, the questions are transported in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior to ensure the safety of those conveying them and to deliver them securely to examination centers.
Education Minister Mohammed Abdul Rahman Turko confirmed, “The ministry is keen to provide a comfortable and calm environment to help students perform their exams optimally.”
In statements to SANA today, he said that there will be daily reports outlining the status of the exams across all directorates to ensure constant oversight and monitoring, and provide an atmosphere of calm and comfort for students to ensure their exams are conducted in an organized manner to achieve the highest quality standards.
The Director of Education in Damascus, Ghassan al-Laham, stated that over 31,000 students are participating in the Basic Education and Religious Education certificate exams in Damascus, distributed across 137 examination centers, and 3,554 students in the Vocational Secondary exams across 27 centers.
For his part, the Director of Education in Rural Damascus, Fadi Nazhat, explained that more than 60,000 students are taking the Basic Education and Religious Education certificate exams, distributed over 321 examination centers, with 3,568 students in the Vocational Secondary exams spread over 46 centers in Rural Damascus.
The Ministry of Education had postponed the exams for both certificates for a week, based on directives from Syrian Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa, according to a video statement by Minister Mohammed Turko on June 8, to complete the necessary procedures for the examination process and “to meet the best interests of the students,” according to the ministry.
The ministry then announced the opening of five examination centers within areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeastern Syria, namely al-Hasakah, Qamishli, Raqqa, Sarrin, and Deir Ezzor (the eastern bank of the Euphrates River).
These decisions stem from “the ministry’s duty to secure the right of Syrian students to education,” as expressed by Minister Mohammed Turko.
Automated exams
This year’s exams are being conducted in an automated manner, after the Ministry of Education in the previous regime applied the automated examination system for the secondary education certificate for the academic year 2024-2025.
The decision covered the automation of subjects: Mathematics, Geography, National Education, Philosophy, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, and History.
Mahmoud Haboub, the Director of Examinations at the Ministry of Education, stated to Enab Baladi that the automated system will feature multiple-choice questions for all secondary certificate subjects in both literary and scientific branches, except for Islamic Education, Christian Education, Arabic Language, and French Language.
Haboub clarified that students will transfer the question number to a designated answer sheet which will be distributed with the question paper, allowing them to answer as required, whether in multiple-choice format or as specified.
He reassured students that the multiple-choice questions will work in their favor, indicating that the time allocated for each subject will be considered, ensuring ample time for reviewing their answer sheets.
The Director of Examinations at the Ministry of Education, Mahmoud Haboub, noted that the correction and verification of answer sheets will be done manually, with no interference from computers.
Haboub pointed out that the initial experience during the first semester faced an error rate of 19.2%, due to insufficient training on exam models and answer shading methods. Therefore, the ministry decided to include a separate answer paper with the question sheets, allowing for more accurate transfer of students’ answers.
The Ministry of Education published sample models to familiarize students with the question styles and assist them in preparing for the exams.
