MILLIONS of Americans may have to find a new cash transfer method as a leading app is taken off the market.
The service will still be available through other parties.
Zelle, a digital banking app with 150 million users in the US, is discontinuing money transfers through its dedicated app.
In order to continue sending and receiving money through Zelle, users will have to turn to bank apps.
The company had previously announced that it would no longer provide payment services on October 31, 2024.
The services officially went offline on Tuesday.
Zelle stated that only 2% of its transactions were made through its standalone app.
The company decided to stop hosting transfers through its app as most Zelle transfers take place using apps specific to banks.
Zelle first debuted in 2017, and its services were available through 30 different US banks at launch.
These include major banks such as Bank of America, JPMorganChase, and Wells Fargo.
As of 2025, more than 2,200 banks and credit unions across the U.S. provide customers access to Zelle through their banking apps.
These transactions account for 98 percent of the company’s financial transactions.
With their standalone app seeing little use, Zelle urged any remaining users to “immediately sign up for their bank’s online services,” which will continue to support Zelle transactions.
“This change will not impact the vast majority of consumers who use Zelle to send or receive money,” Zelle said in a blog post.
Sending money through Zelle allows users to transfer funds simply by scrolling through their phone contacts.
Once logged into a banking app, customers can find the Zelle logo displayed, offering the option to send money or make payments.
Tapping the logo brings up the user’s smartphone contact list, eliminating the need to manually enter long account numbers.
If the recipient’s phone number or email is already linked to a bank account, the transfer is processed instantly.
If they have not signed up for Zelle, they will receive an email or text prompting them to claim their funds after registering.
“Users of the app will continue to be able to access it, but the app will be dedicated to consumer education about scams and fraud and provide a list of the more than 2,200 banks and credit unions that offer Zelle,” the company said.
Zelle processed 3.6 billion banking transactions amounting to $1 trillion in payments.
That number represents a 28% increase from its $806 billion in transactions in 2023.
