Jos Buttler was trying to find a way to redeem himself after dropping a regulation catch of Phil Salt behind the stumps. The Gujarat Titans star admitted that he was “embarrassed” after that dropped catch and wanted to score with the bat as a redemption. Although Salt did not survive long, Buttler stayed true to his words. He smashed an unbeaten 39-ball 73 in RCB vs GT game to power Gujarat to an 8-wicket victory at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in IPL 2025.
“I don’t know, pretty embarrassed. I tried to celebrate in a Herschelle Gibbs style, tried to celebrate way too early. We know Salt is a dangerous player. I barely got a glove on it, and it hit me in the chest. So, I was determined to score some runs,” Jos Buttler said at the post-match presentation.

With pace-battery hunting RCB batters in packs, GT reduced the hosts to 42/4 in the powerplay. But the two dropped chances gave Liam Livingstone lifelines to hammer 40-ball 54. That took RCB to 169/8 in 20 overs. While the score wasn’t big enough at Chinnaswamy Stadium, it could have been a lot less. But it gave Buttler a shot at redemption.
With Shubman Gill falling in the third over, Jos Buttler took his time to settle before going all guns blazing. After 54 and 39 in the two previous innings, he showed he still had it in him, even though he was demoted to the No 3 spot in IPL 2025.

— Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) April 2, 2025After negotiating with Yash Dayal and Rasikh Dar’s pace, he opened up. It took him nine balls to hit the first boundary, but that was just the beginning. Buttler smashed Rasikh for 17 runs in the ninth over to change gears. Then on, it was smooth sailing for him.
He added 75 runs with Sai Sudharsan (49) and then added an unbeaten 53-run stand with Sherfane Rutherford to close the RCB vs GT game in the 18th over with two sixes against Josh Hazlewood. His knock had five fours and six sixes as he struck at a strike rate of 187.18.
“I really enjoyed it. Felt the bowlers did a fantastic job. If we fielded better, myself included, we would have chased less. Nice win and well deserved. As a team, we did not field well but fielded poorly. There was a bit in the wicket, so the two openers played sensibly to take the sting out of that and set up the chase. I tried to play with freedom and intent. Had a few months of unenjoyable cricket. Now, I am trying to give my best and excited to be here,” Buttler said.
