Posthumous congratulations to Sgt. Oliver Hopkins and Det. Charles Harris, who will be honored with the Police Cross on April 3 at San Diego Police Headquarters.

Sgt. Hopkins and Det. Harris were killed in the line of duty in 1915 and 1927. Det. Harris is the only fallen SDPD member whose killer has never been arrested.

Hopkins joined the San Diego Police Department in January 1911. He served as a patrolman and motorcycle officer before getting promoted to sergeant on July 1, 1915. After choosing to remain on motorcycle duty, Sgt. Hopkins was fatally struck by a drunk driver the very next day. He was survived by his wife and three children.

Harris also joined the San Diego Police Department in January 1911. Before getting promoted to detective, he worked as a bicycle squad officer and horse-mounted patrolman. On April 3, 1927, Det. Harris and three officers went on a stakeout in Balboa Park to catch a prolific robber. Tragically, the robber shot and killed Det. Harris before fleeing the scene. The identity of the suspect was never determined, nor was he arrested.

The San Diego Police Department has worked with the San Diego Police Historical Association over the last few years to honor its fallen officers with the police cross. The San Diego Police Historical Association has worked tirelessly to locate the families of the police cross recipients. Sgt. Hopkins and Det. Harris’ families will be present to receive the awards on their behalf.
