Ex-Manchester United coach claims Bruno Fernandes would ‘fit like a glove’ at Real Madrid

Ex-Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes Bruno Fernandes could be destined for Real Madrid this summer.

The Red Devils captain has been linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu in recent days.

Despite Ruben Amorim shutting down the reports, Meulensteen has admitted he could still leave Old Trafford.

Appearing on Breakfast to discuss his old club, the 61-year-old was asked if there were any ‘unsellable’ players in his squad.

Meulensteen explained: “There’s always players that you want to hold on to and there were plenty of them, but you know it’s the nature of the beast and the market how it is.

“If players want to better themselves or go somewhere else to another club, to another country it’s hard to stop.

“I mean you do hear the rumours, at least that’s what I hear, that maybe Real Madrid might be interested in him.

“Which I can see because (Luka) Modric is obviously getting older and I think he would fit like a glove in that Real Madrid team.

“I tell you what it would be an absolute ball for him with all the players around him and his passing range. He would just be a joy.

“But I do think Bruno is very committed to Manchester United and I think they can’t afford to lose him really.”

Luka Modric, who turned 39 in September, is out of contract in the Spanish capital this summer, increasing the chances of a move for Fernandes.

Despite that, Amorim bluntly responded to the reports ahead of his side’s loss to Nottingham Forest, stating: “No, it’s not going to happen.”

The United boss added: “We are in control of the situation and I feel that he is really happy here especially because he understands what we want to do and then I think he is one more supporter of Man United.

“He really feels it. Sometimes the frustration that you see, that everybody sees and maybe says is not a good thing in a captain, is a sign that he wants this so bad.

“This is the kind of player that we want and he’s not going anywhere because I’ve already told him!”

Fernandes has scored 95 goals and provided 82 assists in 278 appearances for the Red Devils since signing in January 2020.

Those include a staggering 32 goal contributions during the current campaign.

The Portugal international’s contract is not set to expire until 2027, with United holding the option of a further year.

As for Meulensteen, he had two spells at the club during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure with his first as reserve team boss from 2001 to 2006.

The Dutchman returned to United a year later as a technical coach before becoming Ferguson’s assistant.

He remained in the role until the legendary manager departed in 2013, having coached Cristiano Ronaldo during his emergence as one of the world’s best.

Ronaldo won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 and was part of the United side that won eight trophies in three years up to his exit – for Real Madrid – in 2009.

With Meulensteen amongst the coaching staff, the Red Devils won three consecutive league titles as well as the Champions League and Club World Cup.
