Molly Qerim accuses Stephen A. Smith and Co of being ‘hypocritical’ live on First Take over controversial NBA remarks

FIRST Take host Molly Qerim called out Stephen A. Smith and the rest of the show’s remarks on an NBA brawl involving the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves.

The ESPN show discussed the on-the-court fight that led to ejections and suspensions during the Timberwolves‘ 123-104 win over the Pistons.

Smith was “hypocritical” for his thoughts on the matter[/caption]

During the second quarter of Sunday’s matchup at the Target Center, what started as arguing between Detroit rookie Ron Holland and Minnesota’s Naz Reid turned into spillage into the stands.

Players on both teams joined the jawing, and coaches were forced to step in as ejections were followed.

Five players and two coaches were ejected, and it was revealed on Tuesday that Detroit’s Isaiah Stewart later received a two-game suspension for “escalating” the brawl.

Holland, Reid, Pistons’ Marcus Sasser, and Timberwolves’ Donte DiVincenzo all received one-game suspensions for their involvement in the brawl.

On Monday, First Take spoke about the incident, and the cast got themselves into a heated discussion.

Former NBA player Kendrick Peterson shared that he’s a fan of the physicality that was shown in the game.

He also revealed that he wants more teams to be like the Pistons and Timberwolves instead of swapping jerseys after the game and being respectful.

However, Stephen A. said that while he appreciates rivalries, the league will always have to take action against what happened in Minnesota over the weekend.

Qerim quickly threw cold water at Smith’s take.

“We being hypocritical right now,” she said.

Qerim then mentioned the fact that NBA players get criticized for not playing with physicality but are now getting dismissed once they showed the abilities on Sunday.

Co-host Shannon Sharpe, meanwhile, differed from Perkins’ opinion and said that the games can be physical without getting into an altercation.

But after the back-and-forth, Stephen A. shared what he believed the league was going to say after the brawl.

“The league is going to say is that the Knicks versus the Houston Rockets in 1994 was maybe one of the most physical series ever. Yeah it’s also the lowest TV rating. That’s what they’re going to say; that’s all I’m saying,” Smith said.

Molly Qerim's life in the spotlight

Molly Qerim has risen through the ranks to become one of the biggest stars at ESPN.

The popular sports host began her media career in 2006 with ESPN and spent four years with the network.

She then covered college basketball and football for CBS Sports Network in New York.

Qerim balanced that with hosting duties for NFL Network in Los Angeles – fronting NFLAM and NFL Fantasy Live.

The host returned to ESPN in 2015 and immediately took the role of First Take anchor.

And Qerim has been an ever-present, popular host of the daily sports debate show ever since.

The NBA announced when each of the players will serve their suspensions.

“Reid and DiVincenzo will serve their one-game suspensions tonight when the Timberwolves visit the Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena,” the statement continued.

“Stewart will begin serving his two-game suspension Wednesday when the Pistons visit the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center.

“Holland II and Sasser will also serve their one-game suspensions Wednesday night.”

The 43-32 Timberwolves will face the Nuggets on Tuesday, while the 42-33 Pistons will take on the No. 1 seed Thunder on Wednesday.
