ALL-COUNTY GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM 2024-25

    PLAYER OF THE YEAR

    Addison Deal, Mater Dei, Senior

Addison Deal had redemption on her mind as she entered her final high school basketball season.

The Mater Dei senior yearned to reestablish herself as a dominant player after a severe ankle injury wiped out most of her junior campaign.

Consider her goal a done Deal.

She delivered her best season by averaging 19.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 3.4 steals to lead the Monarchs in the postseason.

The Iowa signee caps a stellar high school career by earning her second Orange County girls basketball player of the year honor.

“It’s a great, full-circle type of moment,” Deal said in reflection of her high school career. “That I was injured for pretty much all of last year and then was able to come back this year and accomplish the things that I did, I was very proud of myself and my perseverance through it all.”

“I worked really hard at rehab and my physical therapy,” she added.

Nicknamed the “Real Deal,” the 6-foot point guard earned a long list of accolades. She was selected Trinity League MVP, McDonald’s All-American and Naismith All-America second team.

Deal’s well-rounded game helped Mater Dei to a 29-4 record and the No. 8 spot in MaxPreps’ national rankings. Only three-time defending state champion Etiwanda stopped the Monarchs in the playoffs.

“This was a really good season,” Deal said. “It was definitely a change having a new head coach but I think coach Jody (Wynn) did amazing. We learned and grew, all of us.”

Deal’s growth showed in multiple areas. She averaged about five more points than when she claimed her first O.C. player of the year honor as a sophomore. She also improved as a primary ball handler and leader on the court.

“She’s an absolute gazelle on the court and I call her the best rebounding guard in America,” Wynn said. “Her motor is exceptional, (and so is) her versatility. She leads by example every single day. She’s the hardest worker in the program.”

While Deal is eager to begin at Iowa, she departs the high school ranks thankful for those who helped reach the collegiate level.

From her parents Danny and Ashley, coaches at Mater Dei and the Cal Stars club, to her individual trainers, Deal has felted supported.

The journey included following her brother Tanner into basketball. The siblings often competed in shooting contests on the family basketball court.

“We’re definitely competitive but he was always supportive,” Deal said of her brother, a sophomore guard at Grinnell College in Iowa.

So who won the shooting contests? “I’m not going to lie,” Deal said with a smile, “it was mostly me.”

    COACH OF THE YEAR

In his eighth season, Pat Nunez guided the Chargers (18-12) to their first CIF-SS title with a 52-48 win against Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary in the Division 3A final.

Nunez developed his squad over a four-year cycle and leaned on seniors Bridget Boyd, Camryn Bradshaw and Mariana Mina. He also challenged the team by playing a tougher schedule.

“Every year we got better and better,” said Nunez, whose teams had lost in the first round of the playoffs the previous three seasons.
