Buzz Williams is looking to leave Texas A&M, and the head coach is reportedly closing in on a deal to become the next head coach at Maryland.
At the end of last week, it was reported that Williams was looking to get involved with the job search of the Terrapins if the position opened. It did, as expected, after head coach Kevin Willard left to take the job at Villanova. Willard had become frustrated with Maryland leadership and was especially vocal after the departure of AD Damon Evans.
Now, multiple sources are reporting that Williams to Maryland is nearing completion. Jeff Ermann with InsideMDSports reported on Tuesday that “all signs point” to Williams accepting the job, and ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported soon after that the two sides had finalized a 6-year contract for the head coach.
All signs point to Buzz Williams being Maryland's next coach. There was some late Chris Collins chatter, but it looks like Williams is the choice.

— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) April 1, 2025Williams spent 6 seasons with the Aggies, turning the A&M basketball program into a consistent force over the past 3 seasons. Across 2023-25, Williams produced the first 3-year stretch of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the program since the Aggies went to 6 straight under Billy Gillispie and Mark Turgeon from 2006-11. Ironically, Maryland hired Turgeon off of the 2011 NCAA Tournament run with the head coach going 226-116 overall with the Terps.
Prior to A&M, Williams spent his time taking Marquette and Virginia Tech to a total of 8 NCAA Tournament appearances. Now, we’ll see if Williams can keep things rolling for the Terps after Willard’s departure.
