Diseases Do Not Respect Borders
A perspective from Camille Andros
Last month, WRAL reported that Triangle hospitals have seen a rise in tuberculosis cases. Yet, the reassurance offered—that three-quarters of these cases originated outside the U.S.—misses a crucial point: diseases do not respect borders. Where there is tuberculosis anywhere, there is tuberculosis everywhere—including North Carolina.
In 2023, North Carolina reported 215 active tuberculosis cases, 2024 reported 250. At this rate, 2025 will have the highest incidence of tuberculosis our state has seen in over 30 years.
Cutting global health funding and eliminating health science jobs not only endangers North Carolinians but also undermines our national security. Our interconnected world requires robust, proactive health measures, not complacency.
The Statue of Liberty famously beckons, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…” We must honor that promise, especially to those struggling to breathe free from tuberculosis.
The United States must continue to provide research, medicine, and funding to countries battling high burdens of tuberculosis. Urge our lawmakers to support funding for USAID. It’s not just what a great nation should do—it’s essential for our own protection. Ignoring this global health crisis will inevitably make it our own.
